Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice President for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due
date listed in the Funding Bulletin or by
at least two months prior to the sponsor
deadline if you wish to submit to a limited submission program. Currently

GENERAL
21-1 Joint DMS/NIGMS Initiative to
Support Research at the Interface of the
Biological and Mathematical Sciences
(NSF/NIH)
The Division of Mathematical Sciences in
the Directorate for Mathematical and
Physical Sciences at the National Science
Foundation and the National Institute of
General Medical Sciences at the National
Institutes of Health plan to support
research in mathematics and statistics on
questions in the biological and biomedical
sciences. Both agencies recognize the need
and urgency for promoting research at the
interface between the mathematical sciences and the life sciences. This competition is designed to encourage new
collaborations, as well as to support existing ones. NSF 12-561

21-3 Research Interests of the Air
Force Office of Scientific Research
(AFOSR)
The Air Force Office of Scientific
Research (AFOSR) manages the basic
research investment for the U.S. Air
Force (USAF). As a part of the Air Force
Research Laboratory (AFRL), AFOSR’s
technical experts foster and fund research
within the Air Force Research Laboratory, universities, and industry laboratories to ensure the transition of research
results to support USAF needs. Using a
carefully balanced research portfolio,
research managers seek to create revolutionary scientific breakthroughs,
enabling the Air Force and U.S. industry
to produce world-class, militarily significant, and commercially valuable products. To accomplish this task, AFOSR
solicits proposals for basic research
through this general Broad Agency
Announcement (BAA). This BAA outlines the Air Force Defense Research
Sciences Program. AFOSR invites proposals for research in many broad areas.

21-4 Community Sustainability and
Environmental Stewardship Projects
(NFWF)
Wells Fargo and the National Fish &
Wildlife Foundation have announced
Environmental Solutions for Communities, a new grant program to help communities in the United States create a
more sustainable future through responsible environmental stewardship. The
program seeks to support projects that
link economic development and community well-being to the stewardship and
health of the environment. Collectively,
investments under this initiative will promote a sustainable future for communities by supporting sustainable
agricultural practices and private lands
stewardship; conserving critical land and
water resources and improving local
water quality; restoring and managing
natural habitat, species, and ecosystems
that are important to community livelihoods; facilitating investments in green
infrastructure, renewable energy and
energy efficiency; and encouraging
broad-based citizen participation in
project implementation. (PND 5/18/12)

ARTS & HUMANITIES
21-5 Enduring Questions (NEH)
The NEH Enduring Questions grant program supports faculty members in the
teaching and development of a new
course that will foster intellectual community through the study of an enduring
question. This question-driven course will
encourage undergraduates and teachers to
grapple with a fundamental concern of
human life addressed by the humanities,
and to join together in a deep and sustained program of reading in order to
encounter influential thinkers over the
centuries and into the present day. What is
an enduring question? The following list
is neither prescriptive nor exhaustive but
serves to illustrate. • What is good government? • Can war be just? • What is
friendship? • What is evil? • Are there
universals in human nature? • What are
the origins of the universe? 20120913-AQ

21-6 America’s Historical and
Cultural Organizations (NEH)
America’s Historical and Cultural Organizations grants provide support for museums, libraries, historic places, and other
organizations that produce public programs in the humanities. Grants support
the following formats:• exhibitions at
museums, libraries, and other venues;•
interpretations of historic places, sites, or
regions;• book/film discussion programs;
living history presentations; and other
face-to-face programs at libraries, community centers, and other public venues;

21-7 International Collaboration in
Chemistry between US Investigators
and their Counterparts Abroad (ICC)
(NSF)
The National Science Foundation (NSF)
seeks to enhance opportunities for collaborative activities between U.S. and foreign investigators. To realize this goal, the
Division of Chemistry at NSF has partnered with the Fonds zur Förderung der

21-8 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory
Commission Research Announcement
of Opportunity (NRC)
The NRC’s Office of Nuclear Regulatory
Research (RES) furthers the agency’s regulatory mission by providing technical
advice, technical tools and information
for identifying and resolving safety
issues, making regulatory decisions, and
promulgating regulations and guidance.
RES will consider applications from institutions or organizations that propose to
conduct independent experiments and
analyses, develop technical bases for supporting realistic safety decisions by the
agency, and evaluate safety issues involving current and new designs and technologies. This FOA allows the PDs/PIs to
define the scientific focus or objective of
the research based on particular areas of
interest and competence. Prior year RES
awards include topics such as nuclear
materials safety research, radioactive
waste safety research, fire research, digital instrumentation and controls,
advanced VHTR gas-cooled reactor,
probabilistic risk assessment training,
basic research on high temperature gas
reactor thermal hydraulics and reactor
physics. RGR-FN-0512-RES (GG 5/30/

21-9 DoD Ovarian Cancer Academy
Award-Early-Career Investigator
(DoD)
The OCRP Ovarian Cancer Academy,
which was initially created in FY09, is
intended to be a unique, interactive virtual
academy providing intensive mentoring,
national networking, and a peer group for
junior faculty. The overarching goal of the
Ovarian Cancer Academy is to develop
successful, highly productive ovarian
cancer researchers in a collaborative
research training environment. The current Ovarian Cancer Academy is a virtual
career development and research training
platform consisting of seven Early-Career
Investigator/Designated Mentor pairs
from different institutions and one Academy Dean. The Academy Dean serves as
a resource for the Early-Career Investigators and Mentors, assesses the progress of
the Early-Career Investigators, and facilitates communication and collaboration
among all of the Early-Career Investigators and Mentors. W81XWH-12-OCRPOCA (GG 2/27/12)

21-10 DOD Breast Cancer Idea Award
(DOD)
The Idea Award is designed to promote
new ideas that are still in the early stages
of development and have potential to
yield highly impactful data and new avenues of investigation. This mechanism
supports conceptually innovative, highrisk/high-reward research that could lead
to critical discoveries or major advancements that will accelerate progress toward
ending breast cancer. Applications should
include a well-formulated, testable
hypothesis based on strong scientific
rationale. Innovation and impact are the
most important aspects of the Idea Award.

21-13 Rapid Assessment Post-Impact
of Disaster (R03) (NIH)
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity
Announcement (FOA) is to provide an
expedited funding mechanism for
research in the aftermath of disasters and
mass casualty events. Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact
NIMH Program Staff before submitting a
RAPID application to determine whether
or not the proposed work meets the guidelines of this program, whether requested
RAPID funding is likely to be available,
and whether the idea should be considered for initial submission as a fully
developed, non-expedited application via
a regular/parent FOA. RAPID grants
described in this FOA may be used to
facilitate initial research for investigators
who intend to follow up with a full
research application, using the preliminary time sensitive data from a RAPID
grant as the basis for their subsequent
application. PAR-12-180 (NIHG 5/4/12)
