Mandarin Business and Current Affairs
Prerequisite for entry
Successful completion of Mandarin Syllabus D at the UCL CLIE or if you have a very good grasp of the language and are
able to conduct a conversation without difficulty.
Course duration
20 x 2-hour classes.
Self-Study
80 hours in total.

LCMA6005, LCMAG005, LCMAM005, LCMA6045, LCMAG045 and LCMAM045 (together with Mandarin syllabus D).
Aims and Objectives
The course covers specialised vocabulary to enable participants to use their language skills in a more professional
environment, such as discussions and interviews, as well as covering related topics such as current affairs and the latest
trends in Chinese society. The course will enhance knowledge of Chinese life, society and business culture using complex
and linguistically accurate structures (different types of discourse, register). Various transferable skills will also be
further developed.
Course Content







Describing the organizational structure;
Financial management and strategy plan ;
Arranging business appointments;
Conducting a meeting: note taking and speech;
Recruitment: writing a C.V. and interview skills;
Chinese business culture;
News reading and summarising.
Linguistic Structures




Formal written and spoken language;
Introduction to Classical Chinese to replace oral Chinese;
Use of appropriate expressions for commercial activities;
Analysing texts.
