Fact Check #1
Exelon Does Not Need a Bailout.
Before we put ratepayers on the hook for an Exelon bailout, we need to check the facts.
• Exelon Claim: “Several of our Illinois nuclear plants are experiencing major losses
each year that we can’t continue to sustain.1”
Fact: Exelon’s Illinois nuclear fleet is profitable, according to Crain’s. 1
Crain’s Chicago Business analyzed Exelon’s SEC filings and verified that its Illinois nuclear fleet
is profitable. Meanwhile, reports by ICC, IPA, IEPA and DCEO could not verify Exelon’s claims of
financial hardship because Exelon refuses to open its books to verify its claims.
• Exelon Claim: Illinois nuclear plants need hundreds of millions more ratepayer
dollars each year to stay open.2
Fact: Exelon is already expected to receive hundreds of millions more
per year from ratepayers through new electric grid rules it pushed. 3
Because of changes in electric grid rules that Exelon pushed for,4 we’re already going to be paying higher
electric bill and giving hundreds of millions more to Exelon…even before this latest bailout. Struggling
Illinois homeowners and businesses simply can’t afford to pad Exelon’s profits even further.
• Exelon Claim: Illinois nuclear plants “face a perfect storm of economic challenges
that threaten their continued operation.4”
Fact: In 2014, Exelon made profits of more than $2 billion or $236,000
per hour ever y day, 24/7/365. 5
By any measure – Exelon is very profitable and does not need another bailout from Illinois
ratepayers. This private, for-profit company has the ability to invest in Illinois to maintain jobs and
electric service without additional ratepayer dollars.
