Exelon Wind Environmental Intern Recounts Summer Experience My internship experience for Exelon Wind has been anything but ordinary. From day one, I was busy working on an environmental gap analysis of Exelon Wind’s entire fleet. Up until that day, I did not even know what a gap analysis was. Having only done research on the wind industry for my senior thesis on whether or not there should be a wind farm out in Nantucket Sound, I found that there was a very steep learning curve when it came to understanding environmental affairs and permitting in the wind industry. While working at Exelon Wind, my supervisor in Permitting and Environmental Affairs, Manager Tim Clapp, has kept me very busy with various projects. Since Tim is currently a one man show for Environmental Affairs and Permitting at Exelon Wind, I was able to help Tim by completing meaningful assignments. These projects included the creation of the Bird and Bat Incidental Find Protocol (BBIFP) that I worked on with Yvonne Abernethy (Exelon Power Environmental Services) and Tim; the work on the gap analysis mentioned above, as well as on several other gap analyses; work on various environmental and permit compliance matrices and FAA spreadsheets for three of Exelon Wind’s current construction projects; work with Michael Simelton, manager in Developmental, to help create an Environmental Services-provided reporting tool on SharePoint; as well as several debriefs on potential wildlife concerns and our mitigation efforts. I have even learned to be able to be able to speak in Wind Industry acronyms. But, most importantly, this internship has given me real world experience in the wind industry, which is invaluable. I have been able to work with experts in the wind industry, as well as an expert in the Environmental Affairs and Permitting field. This summer experience has taught me a lot about the wind industry, Environmental Affairs and Permitting, as well as the business world. I have even been able to work on projects that add value to the company. This summer experience is one that I will remember forever and I am grateful for the chance to work at Exelon Wind. Scott Clayton, Senior Hampton-Sydney College in Virginia “Scott has been extremely valuable to Environmental Affairs here at Exelon Wind this summer. He has out-performed all initial expectations by not only completing complex tasks and assignments, but by taking initiative to do the necessary ‘deep dives’ that have assisted us on issues and problems with potentially long-term impacts. His reliability, energy and willingness to multi-task throughout our hectic schedules from week to week has been greatly appreciated; he will be missed! We all hope he enjoys what little summer is left, and wish him the best of continued success in completing his college degree and future plans wherever he ends up. He’s got what it takes to do just about anything he wishes.” Timothy J. Clapp Exelon Wind - Manager, Permitting & Environmental Affairs
