10th World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Meeting (WTIM-12) Bangkok, Thailand, 25-27 September 2012 Contribution to WTIM-12 session Document C/18-E 26 September 2012 English SOURCE: Point Topic TITLE: Measuring Internet digital broadcasting ITU WTIM 2012 Session 4 Digital Broadcasting Bangkok, 27 September 2012 Measuring Internet Digital Broadcasting An overview of Point Topic practice and issues Tim Johnson, Consultant Analyst, Point Topic www.point-topic.com Agenda for the talk IPTV (Internet TV) in context What Point Topic does in IPTV IPTV issues to address 2 1 Point Topic’s mission Our mission To provide the best factual source of broadband market information available Fixed broadband, IPTV, VoIP Statistics Operator profiles Analyst reports Broadband maps Postcode map of UK broadband Coming soon Mobile Coming soon Post sector maps of EU countries 3 Defining IPTV IPTV = “Internet Protocol TeleVision” But there’s a difference between what the letters stand for and what IPTV means A practical definition: “Delivering television content to end-users over internet connections” The content may be transported at least partly over dedicated channels by-passing the public internet End-users see the TV content as delivered over their broadband connection “TV+Broadband” cable or FTTP users will find it hard to make the distinction between IPTV and regular TV channels The main categories of service are: OTT – “Over The Top” – content is sent end-to-end over the open internet. Usually free, sometimes with a charge for premium content “IPayTV” - where the content provider invests in some level of dedicated capacity for delivery and a fee is usually charged 4 2 The role of IPTV in digital broadcasting One of 4 digital TV platforms Two major segments to internet TV Over-The-Top (OTT); 500m user homes? Subscription IPTV; 70m+ homes Challenging the established modes? Instant availability Unlimited choice Costs from free to premium Where will the boundaries be? Other platforms will always be cheaper for mass-market broadcasting IPTV Subscriber Total 70,000,000 60,000,000 50,000,000 40,000,000 30,000,000 20,000,000 10,000,000 0 2007Q1 2007Q2 2007Q3 2007Q4 2008Q1 2008Q2 2008Q3 2008Q4 2009Q1 2009Q2 2009Q3 2009Q4 2010Q1 2010Q2 2010Q3 2010Q4 2011Q1 2011Q2 2011Q3 2011Q4 2012Q1 Terrestrial, satellite, cable, internet TV Subscription IPTV: where the service provider supports end-to-end QoE for the end-user . Point Topic data showed 65.6m IPTV subscribers at Q1 2012. This is “the total of the providers we track”, not the full global total. 5 Point Topic’s approach to IPTV data collection A network of researchers compiles ISP data on broadband services, tariffs, subscriber numbers etc. Sources are mainly ISP retail websites A specialist researcher gathers IPTV subscription data and compiles estimates Sources are company reports, media stories, regulator reports Tracking over 100 providers in over 50 countries Researchers enter data direct to an online database Editor reviews, checks and approves for publication Simultaneous publication on a quarterly schedule About 10 weeks after the end of each quarter 6 3 Producing the IPTV dataset Sample shows the researcher ‘s working sheet. Green cells show data from regular operator reports. Blue cells are other sources, usually media reports. Amber are estimates based on actual sources for other quarters. Screen shown here includes service name, technologies used, icons for bundle contents, downstream/upstream bandwidth, data allowance in gigabytes, currency, setup costs with icons for each category, monthly costs, special features, source number. 8 4 Point Topic Broadband Services Database Statistics – IPTV etc. Data on subscription numbers for broadband in general, and IPTV and VoIP services in particular, are collected on the same cycle and entered into the same database. 9 Point Topic Broadband Services Database What the user sees: Viet Nam 10 5 What metrics? Does this define the objective? “We need metrics which will help the ITU, other international agencies, and national planners and policy-makers to understand the economic, social and cultural impact of internet digital broadcasting and to contribute to its successful development.” Number of households using IPTV The total using either or both of the 3main types of service The number with subscription IPTV Hours of viewing IPTV The measure which shows how IPTV relates to the other TV platforms Revenue generated by IPTV Including payments for content as well as service subscriptions Requires a solution to the bundle issue Coverage of IPTV Percentage of households able to receive IPTV 11 How can we measure them? Service providers Traffic measure- CrowdSurveys ment1 sourcing2 User OTT household Subnumbers scription O X X ? X X O ? Hours of viewing O X X ? Revenue generated X3 X O ? Coverage of IPTV O O X X X – Source shown can provide data; O – Source unlikely to provide data 1 Data traffic packet inspection can show where TV content is being downloaded 2 User log-ons, eg to speed test sites, can show where networks are IPTV capable 3 Can be estimated from analysis of tariffs 12 6 The bundle issue Having a large database of broadband service tariffs allows Point Topic to produce statistically valid averages for the prices of multi-play service bundles. International comparison of “Broadband + IPTV” bundle pricing The form of these distributions reveals that ISPs are generally applying relatively similar values to the elements in the bundle. Comparison with broadband-only prices makes it possible to extract a generalised estimate of the proportion of monthly rental which can be attributed to the IPTV component – 34% for this data for end-2010. Hence estimates of IPTV revenue can be derived even when most sales are bundles. 13 Conclusions 1: IPTV situation IPTV, or Internet TV, is of major and growing economic, social and cultural importance Full and consistent international statistics on IPTV are generally lacking Five main IPTV metrics are proposed as the ideal to aim for (see Conclusions 2: IPTV metrics) Collecting the metrics would require international innovation, using for example: Service provider data, Field surveys, Traffic measurement, Crowd sourcing 14 7 Conclusions 2: IPTV metrics Five IPTV metrics are proposed with basic definitions as set out below 1. Total IPTV households • Number of households which use IPTV 2. Subscription IPTV households • Number of households using IPTV services which depend on dedicated infrastructure 3. Hours of viewing IPTV • Average hours of IPTV viewing per household per day 4. Revenue generated by IPTV • Total revenue per year generated by IPTV subscription services 5. IPTV coverage • Percentage of households in areas where IPTV-capable broadband is available The relevance and definition of the of the metrics listed need to be reviewed by the Expert Groups of ITU to ensure international comparability of the data 15 Tim Johnson, Consultant Analyst tim.johnson@point-topic.com +44 (0) 20 3301 3303 www.point-topic.com 16 8
