FACULTY OF LAWS Title & Code of Course Unit LAWS1013: Intro to Law and Legal Method Course Unit 0.0 Year 2013/14 Course Convenor Number Enrolled on Course Alison Diduck Module Unit Report Form 175 A Course Organizer’s Report (quality of student work, pace and content, appropriateness of teaching methods and effects of any action(s) taken to resolve past problems) The course went smoothly this year. Student feedback confirms the satisfactory organization and structure of the course. The two hour first tutorial with personal tutors seems to be working very well. Student feedback suggests that more on essay writing and specific skills might be wanted. Given the scope of the material that must be covered already however, it would be difficult to fit that in as a separate topic. Time is spent at the end of the course on answering problem questions though; I can spare some of this for a few words on general research and essay writing as well. Apart from that, I will publicise the legal writing course offered by Jackie. B Any Learning Resources problems (e.g quality of lecture or tutorial rooms) No re: lectures. I don’t know re: tutorials. C Issues Identified by Students (from questionnaires, staff-student committee etc.) and Action Taken or Planned Student feedback on content of the course is covered above (question A). The only other issue that seemed to be a (minor) problem was that some students questioned the value of the library tour. Some said the groups were too large while others said it was too much information too soon to be useful. I would be reluctant to stop the library tours. Perhaps smaller groups could be organized, but in conjunction with the library booklet and more direct reference to sources in my lectures, I can at least better prepare students for the tour, or ask them in the lecture to reflect back on it. D Issues Identified by Visiting Examiners and Action Taken or Planned This course is not examined. E Vice-Dean for Taught Programmes’ Comments and Action Taken or Planned
