CFT Public Forum Info. / Discuss. D. Schmidtmeier 15 Minutes This item is up for discussion regarding a public forum that is going to be held to hear how the community wants to shape public education. 1 Associated Students of Cabrillo College Aptos Campus, 6500 Soquel Dr., Aptos, CA 95003 Watsonville Center: 318 Union St., Watsonville, CA 95076 Scotts Valley Center: 104 Whispering Pines Dr., Scotts Valley, CA 95066 Voice: 831.477.5677 Fax: 831.479.6172 http://www.cabrillo.edu/ascc Sign-up sheet for the Forum Event Attendance was passed around the Senate. CFT Public Forum is the first of many to come to Cabrillo College. A large population of students, teachers and community members don’t understand what is going on in terms of public education system and proposals that will fundamentally change students, teachers and community memebers experiences and opportunities. The CFT Public Forum serves as a space for people to break out into small informational groups that are intended to inform students and community members of current education proposals and laws. There are current proposals that would affect higher education as last year where classes were slashed from course catalogs. The CFT provides a space for people to act now as future leaders and educators by getting involved and speaking up. An example of current proposals that would affect Cabrillo College students is that of the IE BOG and FASFA that deny high school youth from financial aid because of a 90 unit cap, and other radical online education. People are needed to be advocates for students and the CFT strives to provide a platform for considered students. Educators might not always be able to voice their opinions because of fear of being cut, and students can meet that middle ground of speaking up against actions that limit learning at public institutions. Public education can’t go to waste, and it shouldn’t be privatized. Solution based forum – we outline current issues and were trying to come up with solutions and how to approach county and state officials, the CFT addresses what resolutions we want to approach. In conclusion, the CFT follows a Progressive education in which students are involved in politics in an all-inclusive way. VII. New Business A. Appointment of New Senators and Emissaries 1. Scotts Valley Representative 2. Three Senators-at-Large 3. Student Emissaries 3 Minutes for speech, 3 minutes for questions B. Sustainability Conference Report Info. / Discuss. B. Buckter 20 Minutes This item is up for discussion regarding a report on how the “This Way to Sustainability” Conference went and how sustainability conferences / convergences are becoming a source for learning effective leadership. Sustainability Conference was very informative and provided great networking opportunities for the Cabrillo College students that attended. One interesting sustainable fact that a Cabrillo College student shared was that bee’s have a synchronized dance at certain angles that is related to the sun and other bees can follow their patterns. At the event students were able to learn about CSU coordinating waste events for public areas that promotes sustainability and responsibility on campuses. A CSU student representative named Collin taught Cabrillo students about sustainable earth benches and composting on campuses and how to make them easy for students to use and make sense of. Videos will be uploaded to Dropbox. The structure of the conference was great, the conference started with an introductory speaker and followed with many workshops. The conference provided insight into how leadership can be effectively done and how to create green buildings. An interesting example of CSU sustainability on campus was that when students work out on treadmills or stationary bikes the energy they generate provided electrical energy. Another example of a sustainable practice was that the campus provides water distributing centers around campus to promote the re-use of bottles instead of consuming massive amounts of plastic bottles. Overall the students that attended the conference were very pleased and grateful that the senate funded the event. C. Forum Event Recap Info. / Discuss. D. Schmidtmeier 10 Minutes This item is up for discussion regarding a recap of last week’s forum event at the Watsonville Center. In terms of Senator’s presence, the senate did very well. A lot of the senators attended the Forum. The forum is a great opportunity for senators to connect with students on a personal level, and allow students to feel more comfortable to approach the senate. Ideally Forum Events would happen on a regular basis to help promote the Senate and upcoming elections. Because Watsonville is such a small campus, perhaps the Senate should network with teachers to a lot time to inform students about the Senate. 2 Associated Students of Cabrillo College Aptos Campus, 6500 Soquel Dr., Aptos, CA 95003 Watsonville Center: 318 Union St., Watsonville, CA 95076 Scotts Valley Center: 104 Whispering Pines Dr., Scotts Valley, CA 95066 Voice: 831.477.5677 Fax: 831.479.6172 http://www.cabrillo.edu/ascc Everyone agrees that the senate should discuss in more detail how they would like forums to be done and how often the senate would host them. Senators spend a lot of time in the offices and maybe that time could be transformed into spending more time in the quad with tables and chairs. Overall the Watsonville forum consisted of tabling for about an hour and it went well. Also, the Senate needs more of a follow up with forum event issues and how to move forward with issues. Officially Naming Cabrillo College’s Mascot Info. / Action C. Achen 10 Minutes This item is up for discussion / possible action regarding officially naming the Cabrillo College Seahawk mascot, Sammy the Seahawk along with adopting the “story” of his life. Sammy the Seahawk was adopted by the senate but was never given an official name. This Senate has agreed to finally record an official school mascot name. Perhaps Senators can research ideas and have Sesario and Flor research on how to follow through with any questions or concerns. The athletics department has their own mascot which looks fiercer and more intimidating than the Senate’s mascot. Perhaps someone should research to see what their mascots called. Also, there is a video regarding Sammy’s life on Youtube. Carter moved to approve offically naming Cabrillo College’s school mascot as Sammy the Seahawk and along side adopting the story of his life. Ivan seconded the motion. Motion passed 9/2/3. D. VIII. Committee Reports 3 minutes ea. IX. Reports (Every other name is Bold for Easy Reading) 2 minutes ea. Executive Officers, Senators, Advisers report on Senate Activities. A. Executive Officers President: Charlotte Achen - I encourage the Senate to create an informational video of about 1 minute or 30 seconds on why you joined the senate. A video would allow future senates to provide reasons on why students in the past have joined the senate. Vice President: Laura Hunerberg – Let’s wish Bobby a happy Birthday because his birthday is on April 1 st. Treasurer: Darwin Constantino – The Faculty Senate has created a sub committee – Mooks Watch which serves as a committee that monitors massive open online courses that are to be implemtned in schools and thought to soon reach community colleges. Legislative Representative: Aimée Cornett Student Trustee: Cedar Green – Starting April 1st I will be cross enrolling at UCSC. The class I will be taking meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday’s from 3 – 4:40 p.m. I don’t anticipate that it will conflict with my senate duties but it will make me busier and for that reason I can’t be on the CPC. Inter-Club Council Chair: Devin Monahan – At this past weeks ICC meeting the ICC alloted $400 for canopies, $175 for video equipment, $1000 for the Social Justice lecture funds, and implemented a system for using the popcorn machine. And as usual please remember to send me your office hours so that I can arrange fax machine hours. Ivan Sumano – Vargas – I’ld like to thank the senate again for funding the sustainability conference!!! Tana Desandres Dieter Schmidtmeier Sharon O’Connor Natacha Wells Bobby Buckter Rory Schneider Laurence Applen – Please spread the word that the Social Violence Awareness event will take place on April 17 th. C. Advisors 5 minutes ea. Sesario Escoto – In terms of the Social Justice Conference $1,400 has been allocated for food, and were struggling to meet constituents desires of local and sustainable food, so were trying to find a faculty advisor to take on that responsibility. In terms of the SAC Event, the event was phenomenal, I heard comments around campus that the vent was well attended and entertaining. So, kudos and recognition to Flor for coordinating the first annual SAC Event show. Finally let’s remember about Alert-u tabling and the senates involvement. Flor Chacòn – It’s almost April which means that there are 8 weeks of semester until finals come up. I want to put it into perspective so that the senate can visualize and prioritize what you want to accomplish in those last 8 weeks. For example the social justice conference, and running start are coming up. Also, tabling for alert-u and elections are also coming up in a little time and think of your role in those tasks during that time. Elections are coming up and 7 applications have been submitted. Overall keep up the great work and have a relaxing spring break. X. Agenda Building XI. Since I started about 4 years ago the meetings lasted untill 7-8 pm and the meetings were very intensive and got less accomplished, whereas this senate is getting out early and accomplishing a lot!
