The 2012 – 2013 Cabrillo College Graduation will be on June 7th at 4 pm It would be courteous to the 2012- 2013 graduating class to provide them with snacks The ceremony takes about two hours, and students always get hungry and thirsty while waiting for the ceremony to begin. In prior years, Senate’s have given student snacks and scantrons during finals week. Carter moved to approve $500.00 from the Programs Account for food to serve during finals week. Laura seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously 11/0/0. E. Cafeteria Renovations Info. / Action L. Hunerberg 15 Minutes This item is up for discussion / possible action regarding the approval of the formal plans for the cafeteria renovations. This discussion will serve as an update on current cafeteria renovations. The project plan is continuing well with Craig Bailey, our project manager. The cafeteria floor will have durable ceramic tiles. We are currently looking for tile designs which will be ideally tan, dark blue and blue. We plan to paint and renovate the walls. We plan to install new electric outlets above student bar counters where students can study. We plan to install new and better lighting that will have pendent’s hanging from the ceilings. We plan to install new furniture, new tables and new chairs. We project the construction to happen over the summer, if final plans can be submitted by June 2nd to the Faculty and Planning Facility committee for approval. The projected construction expenses remain at $580,000. F. MOOCs Info/ Discussion D. Constantino 15 Minutes This item is up for discussion regarding the Massive Open Online Courses committee. Massive Open Online Courses are being used across the nation. MOOCs is building up in interest and popularity. Cabrillo College has organized a sub-committee of Faculty Senate named MOOCs. We need to address questions such as: Does MOOCs have a place in education? Can an online course completely replace an in person lecture? MOOC’s has a place in education, but not to replace teachers – this is a common fear $2 million per course – teachers want to know how they can keep up with this type of investment. We agree that the place of MOOCs is to supplement a live teacher. A recurring issue is that MOOCs companies want returns on their investments – so we need to consider if this would create a two-tear system so poor students would be disadvantaged. Also, there needs to be a balance between Cabrillo College extension courses offered and MOOCs. We need to address what are distinctions between MOOCs and current online courses. MOOCs courses have cyber classes of 70,000 students!!! Generally speaking, on-line courses have between 30 – 40 students. Also, it is important to note that MOOCs doesn’t offer certificate or credits. 2 Associated Students of Cabrillo College Aptos Campus, 6500 Soquel Dr., Aptos, CA 95003 Watsonville Center: 318 Union St., Watsonville, CA 95076 Scotts Valley Center: 104 Whispering Pines Dr., Scotts Valley, CA 95066 Voice: 831.477.5677 Fax: 831.479.6172 http://www.cabrillo.edu/ascc Furthermore, in order to take a test, you need to schedule an exam at a proctoring center which costs $50. Finally, we should consider that there could be a huge disconnect between material and student. Aimme moved to extend time by 3 minutes. Darwin seconded the motion. Motion to extend time by 3 minutes passed unanimously. Issues of student integrity need to be considered as well. On-line courses do not guarantee that students are present. Also, accreditation issues are relevant to students. Informal vote of who would take a MOOCs class. 4/7/0. Informal vote of MOOCs having a place in online education. 10/1/0. G. Outdoor meetings Info/ Discussion L. Hunerberg 10 Minutes This item is up for discussion regarding having at least one more meeting outside before the term ends. Next week’s meeting should be outside in front of the library. With elections happening next week, it would be a great way to promote elections if the Senate were to have a meeting outdoors and accessible to students. We will be able to connect our Star Fish Device to outdoor outlets. Those in favor of having next week’s meeting outside. Motion passed 8/2/1. H. End of year celebration Info/ Discussion C. This behavior should be addressed as a “POINT OF ORDER” during the meeting, so as to discourage distracting conversations. Discussion of Senate 5 Minutes 3 meetings left for the 2012 – 2013 Senate. We should address committee meeting and seante absence. We should clarify if missing multiple committee meetings on one day could cause a senator to be on probation. We need to address office policies. Office policies are currently not being complied with on a daily basis. For example, there are students using computers and printing services while senators are not in the offices.
