One Day National Workshop
on
Web-Scale Discovery Services:
Single Window Access to Library e-Resources
The Central Library of Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur is going to organize
one day workshop on “Web-Scale Discovery Services: Single Window Access to
Library e-Resources” on dated 10th Jan, 2014.
What is a Web scale discovery service?
Web scale discovery is a transformative technology that allows library users to
search seamlessly across a vast range of local and remote, pre - harvested and
indexed content, receiving relevancy-ranked results in the intuitive interface, which
is expected by today's information seekers.
Web Scale Discovery Services provides a single and simple entry point which
searches the pre-indexed metadata and full text documents. It creates a unified,
customized index of an institution's information resources and a powerful means of
accessing all the content from a single search box. It also harvests metadata from
both internal (library OPAC, IDR) and external (subscribed) resources, to create a
pre indexed service of unprecedented size and speed.
The workshop primarily focuses on three different aspects of Web scale discovery
services.
1. How to design and develop a discovery services?
2. How to integrate with existing Content Management Software or Web Site?
3. E-Resources Integrated with Discovery Service
a. Subscribed e resource management
b. Open access e resource management
c. Institutes own growing Digital Repository and OPAC management
The purpose of this workshop is to provide adequate knowledge to library
professionals, which will enable them to take initiatives for designing and
developing their own “Single Window Search Box”.
Resource Kit: CD/DVD containing a list of Open access e-resources (eBooks,
journals, articles etc), Which is highly useful to the UG, PG and Research Scholar
students.
The list is being developed as a small project initiative called “Open e-Access” by
web team, central library IIT Kharagpur under the guidance of Dr. B. Sutradhar.
