The Great Gatsby Chapter Packet Guidelines:
As we read The Great Gatsby, you will be responsible for creating a packet for each of the chapters. Each 70
point packet will contain the following:
1. Create a title and an illustration for the chapter, then write a well-developed paragraph (upwards of 8
sentences) explaining 1.) Why the title you have chosen suits the chapter and 2.) How the illustration
you have drawn is relevant to the chapter. (10 points)
2. Select a song that relates to the main idea of the chapter, include the lyrics (or an excerpt of the lyrics),
and write a well-developed paragraph (upwards of 8 sentences) explaining how the song relates to the
chapter. (10 points)
3. Complete a vocabulary matrix for the ten chapter vocabulary words. (15 points)
4. Answer the chapter questions thoroughly and in complete sentences. (15 points)
5. Select five significant passages, quote in MLA, and write a well-developed paragraph (upwards of 8
sentences) for each. For each quote include 1.) Who said the quote (if not dialogue, Nick would be
the speaker), 2.) Who or what the quote is about, 3.) What the circumstances are that prompt the quote,
4.) What it reveals about mankind and/or the modern world, and 5.) Why you find this quote
“significant” (see below). (20 points)
What is a significant passage?
Significant passages that are easy to spot:

- who he/she really is; why he/she
behaves in the ways he/she does; reactions of other characters to him/her; why she/he is important in
the novel; relationships characters have to one another, etc.
 A paragraph or quote that shows some change in a character or explains motivation for a character’s
actions.

literary
device or narrative technique in the novel. Look for symbolism of color.
Significant passages that may be more difficult to find:
 Literary techniques: here, you comment on the significance of the structure, diction, imagery, tone,
setting, figurative language (metaphor, simile, personification) in a portion of the work.

literary
technique from this novel and a work we’ve studied earlier in the year.
