The basic function of this position is to provide professional supervision to the SimuLab fire assay section. The incumbent is responsible for the supervision of all personnel within the section and ensuring that the quality policy and objectives of SimuLab are met within the section. Although the incumbent is expected to have a “hands on” role within the area of responsibility there is the expectation that training of subordinates is also a key function. The incumbent is expected to achieve NATA signatory status for the area of expertise, and will therefore review the quality of analytical results reported to clients. DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB: DESCRIBE THE SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE JOB AS ACCURATELY AND COMPLETELY AS POSSIBLE. Identify essential functions of the job with an asterisk (*). 25% Undertake fire assay analysis of customer samples. Bench work may be directed towards the method development role required to analyse complex samples or “new” customer samples where a high level of expertise is required. “New” customer samples may require a component of R&D and this R&D component would require formal documentation.* 25% Subordinate training in fire assay and quality control techniques as detailed in the SimuLab quality system.* 25% Evaluation of quality control data prior to reporting customer results.* 10% Ordering of fire assay section consumables to ensure that goods are received “just in time”. 5% Assist management in evaluation of contract proposals.* 5% Professional development. 5% Perform other related duties as assigned. JOB REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, the incumbent must be able to perform the essential duties satisfactorily. Educational Requirements (Include certificates, licences and/or registrations required.) 1. Formal qualification in fire assay techniques, e.g., Kalgoorlie School of Mines. Experience Requirements 1. At least 10 years professional experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 1. 2. Current drivers license. Current forklift license desirable. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: (Work environment characteristics described including hazards that may be encountered while performing the essential functions of the job.) Exposure to high temperatures with the use of fusion and cupellation furnaces. Exposure to lead within the work environment, lead levels will be monitored for all personnel at risk. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Physical demands detailed here are representative of those that must be met for an employee to successfully perform essential functions.) Employees within this area are expected to pour high temperature fusions (five [5] at a time), although equipment used in the process is “state–of-the-art” the job function requires a good degree of dexterity and strength.
