POSITION SUMMARY: (Describe the general nature and the level of work performed by this position.)
The basic function of this position is to provide professional supervision to the new, untitled, SimuLab
laboratory. The incumbent is responsible for the supervision of all personnel within the section and ensuring
that the quality policy and objectives of SimuLab are met within the section. The incumbent is expected to
have a “hands on” role within the area of responsibility as well as assess the need for and implement
appropriate training of subordinates as required.
The incumbent is expected to achieve NATA signatory status for the area of expertise, and will therefore
review the quality of analytical results reported to clients.
DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB: DESCRIBE THE SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE JOB AS
ACCURATELY AND COMPLETELY AS POSSIBLE. Indicate the approximate percentage of time devoted to each major task or group
of related tasks. Identify essential functions of the job with an asterisk (*).
25% Undertake analysis of customer samples. Bench work will include method selection and/or development
and method validation, as required to analyse complex samples and the “new” customer samples,
which will form a major proportion of throughput. “New” customer samples will require a component of
R&D and this R&D component would require formal documentation.*
25% Subordinate training in specific analytical methods and techniques as well as quality control techniques
as detailed in the SimuLab quality system.*
25% Evaluation of quality control data prior to reporting customer results.*
10% Ordering of section consumables to ensure that goods are received “just in time”. Evaluate suppliers as
detailed in the SimuLab quality system.

Assist management to evaluate contract proposals.*

Perform other related duties as assigned.

All work is directly supervised by the SimuLab Laboratory manager.

work; and (e) approve work.)
Has functional supervision of all staff within the Section, this includes full and part-time employees as well as
casual and contract personnel.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
The responsibilities of the position are to ensure the laboratory meets enterprise needs and external obligations for:
a) Accreditation of the technical competence.
b) Statutory and Legal compliance.
c) Registration, Licensing, Permit and Certification conformance.
d) Standards, codes of practice and behaviour.
Specifically, this will require performance of the following duties:







Maintain currency with additions, deletions and changes to the requirements of all enterprise needs and obligations.
Interpret all current requirements for their relevance and application to your laboratory work area.
Communicate current interpretation of all requirements to your work-groups and to other enterprise stakeholders.
Ensure your area's work practices comply with these obligations.
Monitor and report performance as assessed against these obligations.
Take all preventive and corrective actions necessary to maintain compliance.
Access, use and comply with all Simulab support resources, including systems of work, work procedures,
information management and specialist personnel.
Educational Requirements (Include certificates, licences and/or registrations required.)
Degree, diploma or equivalent in Applied Science relevant to analysis of physical, chemical and/or bio-medical samples
and materials.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in quality assurance and its maintenance, fine-tuning and troubleshooting.
Experience Requirements
At least 5 years current and relevant professional experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Current driver’s license.
Current forklift license desirable.
Work place trainer and workplace assessor qualifications and experience desirable.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: (Work environment characteristics described including hazards that may be encountered while
performing the essential functions of the job.)
Risk of exposure to an undefined range of physical-, chemical- and bio- hazards will occur. Health
surveillance for exposure to identified hazards within the work environment will be monitored.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Physical demands detailed here are representative of those that must be met for an employee to
successfully perform essential functions.)
Employees within this area are expected to work in accordance with SimuLab’s OH&S policies and
procedures and use the supplied “state–of-the-art” process equipment. The job function requires a good
degree of dexterity and fitness, with very little opportunity to work whilst seated.
