Plotted here as a function of UTC are:
(1) the altitude above Enceladus' limb of the line-of-sight from Cassini to the star; (2) the attenuation of the HSP signal, scaled by a factor of 300; and
(3) the projections of the 8 jets seen by the ISS instrument6 into the plane of the figure. The jets have each, for purposes of illustration, been assigned a length of 50 km. In the labels, the letters A, B, C, and D refer to the "tiger stripes" Alexandria, Baghdad, Cairo, and Damascus, respectively, and the original Roman numerals have been replaced by Arabic. The label C/A marks the closest approach of the lineof-sight to Enceladus. The times and positions at which the line-of-sight intersected the centerlines of the jets are marked by squares. Jet B7 was intersected 35 km from its source on
Enceladus' surface; the corresponding distances for jets B6 and C8 were within 18 +- 1 km, and for the others, within 23 +- 2 km. Other things (such as jet strength) being equal, the width of the attenuation feature associated with each jet should be proportional, and the magnitude inversely proportional, to this distance.
