UVIS Input to Cassini
Quarterly Report

July 28, 2006
(For May-Jul 2006)
UVIS Accomplishments
• Science Highlights
–
Self-gravity wakes observed throughout Saturn's B ring. Multiple occultations allow
measurement of wake properties, showing B ring self-gravity wakes are only a few meters
thick and ~ 100 meters wide with narrow (10-30 m) gaps between them.

UVIS Plans (May - July 2006)
• Upcoming Science Activities
–
(for next quarter)
Two Enceladus flybys (one in September and one in November) and one Dione flyby in
November. FUV maps will be acquired to analyze and compare icy satellite surface
composition, grain size of ices, photometry, and to look for the existence of tenuous gases.
We will attempt to see changes in the plume discovered at Enceladus last year.
• Publications in the works this quarter
– “Moonlets and Clumps in Saturn’s F Ring” Esposito, Meinke, Colwell. To be submitted to
Icarus.
