UVIS Input to Cassini Quarterly Report L.W. Esposito October 23, 2006 (For Aug-Oct 2006) 1 UVIS Accomplishments • Science Highlights – Self-gravity wakes observed throughout Saturn's B ring. Multiple occultations allow measurement of wake properties, showing B ring self-gravity wakes are only a few meters thick and ~ 100 meters wide with narrow (10-30 m) gaps between them. The model from previous occultation data predicts well our new observation. 2 UVIS Accomplishments (Continued) • Scientific Publications – – Published Aug - Oct 2006: 2006 to date: 0 3 (From Q1’s start of Feb. 2006- through Q4’s end of Jan. 2007) – – – Entire mission: 43 (including 20 additions that were recently found on the JPL Cassini bibliography site, but were not included in our prior reports) Submitted Aug - Oct 2006: 2 Submitted in 2006 8 (From Q1’s start of Feb. 2006- through Q4’s end of Jan. 2007) 3 UVIS Accomplishments (Continued) • Science Presentations - Aug-Oct 2006 – 1 Science Seminars – 16 Presentations at Scientific Meetings 4 UVIS Accomplishments (Continued) • Public Outreach – Press releases • 0 Aug-Oct 2006 • 1 2006 YTD (From Q1’s start of Feb. 2006- through Q4’s end of Jan. 2007) – Press conferences & interviews • 0 Aug-Oct 2006 • 0 2006 YTD (From Q1’s start of Feb. 2006- through Q4’s end of Jan. 2007) – EPO: Talks to school children, teachers and public • 0 Aug-Oct 2006 • 25 2006 YTD (From Q1’s start of Feb. 2006- through Q4’s end of Jan. 2007) 5 UVIS Plans For Nov 2006 - Jan 2007 • Upcoming Science Activities – – (for next quarter) Enceladus flyby in November and Dione flyby in November. FUV maps will be acquired to analyze and compare icy satellite surface composition, grain size of ices, photometry, and to look for the existence of tenuous gases. We will attempt to see changes in the plume discovered at Enceladus last year. Multiple ring star occultations. • Publications in the works this quarter – “Moonlets and Clumps in Saturn’s F Ring” Esposito, Meinke, Colwell. Submitted to Icarus in Sept. • EPO in the works – (for next quarter) Ring movie • Upcoming Science Presentations and Seminars (for next quarter) – AGU, San Francisco, December 11-15 (Pryor, Esposito, Colwell) 6 Backup Material UVIS October 23, 2006 7 UVIS Publications: Published 2006 (From Q1’s start of Feb. 2006- through Q4’s end of Jan. 2007) • • • Hansen, C., J.
