Quarterly
Haloes in Saturn’s rings can be explained by the same dynamics that creates straw in the
strongest density waves. A “Predator-Prey” model of moon-triggered clumping gives higher
velocity for collisions, which can remove ring-particle regolith, depositing this brighter material
in a “halo” around the wave.
