NASA Quarterly UVIS Q1 - 2013 (Nov 2012– Jan 2013) Quarterly 1 <date> UVIS: Science Highlights Quarterly 2 <date> UVIS: Accomplishments Science Highlights (from this quarter: Nov 2012 – Jan 2013) • Quarterly Haloes in Saturn’s rings can be explained by the same dynamics that creates straw in the strongest density waves. A “Predator-Prey” model of moon-triggered clumping gives higher velocity for collisions, which can remove ring-particle regolith, depositing this brighter material in a “halo” around the wave. 3 <date> UVIS: Accomplishments • Publications – Published this quarter – In press (Went into press Nov 2012-Jan 2013, also includes still in press from earlier quarters) – Submitted (Submitted Nov 2012-Jan 2013, also includes submitted earlier and still in review) – Published 2013 to date (since Nov. 2012) – Published entire mission 1 4 7 1 154 • Presentations at scientific conferences (Nov 2012 – Jan 2013) – 13 presentations at the AGU in San Francisco, December 3-7, 2012 (Baillie, Becker, Bradley, Colwell (2), Dove, Esposito, Gustin, Hansen, Lavvas, Meinke, West, Yung) • Public Outreach and Press Activities (Nov 2012 – Jan 2013) – – – Quarterly 0: public talks 2 : press releases 0: press conferences (phone interviews) 4 <date> UVIS: Plans – Science Plans (Feb – Apr 2013) • Bradley: Continue investigation of ring particle albedo • Bradley: Compare Saturn ring spectra with Saturn icy moon spectra • Colwell: Paper on faint and narrow rings is in production (student Bryce Bolin is lead author). • Colwell: Paper on occultation statistics is in production (Colwell lead author). • Colwell: New paper on self-gravity wakes is in preparation (Colwell or Jerousek lead author). • Colwell: Submit new and updated occultation data sets to the Planetary Data System. • Colwell: Paper on analysis of Rev 9 solar occ diffraction signal from F ring is in preparation (student Becker is lead author). – Publications (Feb – Apr 2013) In preparation (includes submitted, but not yet published) Quarterly • 1 paper in press in an AGU monograph on the auroras • 1 paper in review in Astron.
