1. Faculty Administrative Assignments
 Discussion at the administrative level on college reorganization includes possible changes to
the area coordinator structure. No decisions have been made, but if this moves forward, ideas
on how to best implement this change need to be considered. If CR moves away from the area
coordinator concept, then it should be replaced with a more concise definition of faculty
responsibilities and elements. The Dean’s council discussed various options:
o Start with a list of area coordinator duties and see when the dean’s/directors or faculty can
best support, and determine if TLU time is required. If TLU support is not possible,
elevate the AOA positions to office coordinator positions to absorb mid-level duties.
o F/T faculty are required to be included in the evaluation process. Ideally, if every faculty
member participated in two evaluations each semester, it would be done (approximately 90
a year/45 per semester for full time faculty.
o This is a negotiation issue, but allowing associate faculty, who have a long history at CR,
as evaluators would help in getting evaluations done. A savings is still realized even if they
are offered, (for example, $1000) more money annually; this has added benefit of bringing
them more directly into the organization.
o Curriculum updates, currently the responsibility of lead faculty or subject matter experts,
can be moved to the AOA positions, as can scheduling meetings and setting up dialog.
o There was discussion that if faculty are assigned professional responsibilities, to change
area coordinator positions to, for example, assessment coordinator or program review
coordinator. Program review oversight is basically November through January. A small
stipend can be offered it necessary.
o Discussion on redefining faculty obligations outside the classroom, (which would be
assigned by the academic senate), and using a point system for parity, would allow
measurement. For example, require 10 or 20 points of participation by each faculty
member and include points in faculty load. If the obligation exceeds the point system, a
small stipend can be involved.
o There will be further discussion on this issue.
2. Additional Spring 2012 Sections
 Several of the top 30 courses offering the highest FTES are BIO 6, with 8FTEs and Astronomy,
8FTES. Del Norte is adding six additional sections for spring, two of which are PE, and
searching for instructors. FTES are not yet known.
 Rachel has 10 new sections confirmed and 10 pending:
o Confirmed are Oceans 11, two Geol 10 sections, four Art sections, AG 23, Soc 1 and
Psych 33.
o Proposed are an NAS section, two music sections, two math, GEOG 2, and, maybe, an
extra speech course. (This depends on allowing an associate faculty member to exceed
maximum TLUs); and one or two Spanish courses, if an instructor can be found. PolySci
can become a big section if necessary. This equals about 60 FTES. Faculty are willing to
teach extra sections of English and math if overload and/or banking TLUs are allowed.
 Mendocino Coast will keep trying to add sections; they have no faculty who meet min quals.




CTE is adding five additional CIS and Business tech sections, working on adding more and
trying for a weekend shop class. Steve Brown has an experimental robotics class waiting for
chancellor’s approval.
Addition total about 90 – 95 FTES. A target of 110 better ensures a minimum of 100 FTES.
Spring target is 4465; with these additions, and summer, we may reach this goal.
AJ is looking at doing some advanced classes, which adds 5 FTES. Discussion with CET about
offering medical assisting again for credit. HERO would like to add an extra nutrition section.
Discussing/negotiation is needed to authorize overload, and the 67%.
3. Associate Faculty Exceeding 67% for Spring 2013:
 Discussion that incurring faculty overload is ok; for banking or payment. Ed code states if
associate faculty loads are above 67%, they become “temporary full time” faculty and if they
exceed the 67% twice in a rolling year cycle, CR has to offer them a permanent position. The
associate faculty coordinator tracks this annually. (Exceeding 67% requires negotiations, but
would help acquiring extra associate faculty for spring courses. Negotiation needs to be done
immediately, for this one semester.) Utpal will discuss negotiating this with Kathy, and
discuss benefits with Ahn.
4. Faculty Prioritization Process
 Process will start end of January, as part of the program review process.
5. Experimental Courses for Spring 2013
 Linked to agenda item 2. CTE has two experimental courses: Steve Brown’s experimental
class submitted to the chancellor’s office, and has another guitar-making class, not yet
submitted.
6. Process for Notification When Curriculum Proposals Get CCCCO Approval
 Utpal will discuss with Shereen and Peter to work out a tally system of what courses are in
process, and which are approved. Suggested not to post curriculum on the web until
chancellor’s office approves.
7. Process for Notification on Status of Tenure-Track Faculty (following
Tenure Review Committee's decision)
 Discussion on when and who sends notifications to tenure candidates. The TRC is a
recommending committee and does not notify faculty. Suggested notification should come
from the President when/after it goes to board.
 Per the contract, the TRC can request a candidate receive a second evaluation in the spring. It
was agreed, if the need arises, the committee will include the direct supervisor. (We will check
the contract language as well.)
8. Other
 Communication often goes to faculty/associate faculty with information of which dean’s or
supervisors should be aware. It was agreed that the academic senate should have an email list
that includes faculty, associate faculty, supervisors and AOAs.
 Per Connie Carlson, a recruiting ad is going out and she needs any requests from deans.
 Utpal noted that at this time there are no new cabinet updates.
