College of the Redwoods Program Review Committee Executive Summary Adopted November 6, 2009 Mission Statement The College of the Redwoods’ Program Review Committee leads and facilitates authentic assessment as it relates to student success and planning at the institution for all subject and service areas. The committee reviews Annual and Comprehensive Program Reviews that provide the strong foundation upon which College of the Redwoods develops, identifies, states and documents quality improvement plans and goals including providing the direction of prioritization of funding, and support needs as organized under the strategic planning objectives. Objective: To provide an evaluative Executive Summary of this program’s review for authors, the Integrated Planning Committees, and the District. Program Review Subject/Service Area: ___Medical Assisting___ __________________ Program Review Authors: _____Bonnie Deister, Pat Girczyc_____ ________________________ Summary and Recommendations: 1. Program strengths: Many local Medical Assistants have come through CR Development of an online course, required for program, but open to all (medical terminology); 4. Dept. of labor funding allows students who are already MA’s to take course for pay increase; 5. Program has the most active advisory board of all programs; Clinics send students to CR to get certified 2. Program challenges/obstacles: Current FT faculty leaving; difficult to find full time faculty that meet minimum qualifications and can contribute to the health care program; Healthcare community is changing – how medical information is stored and transmitted; the move to electronic and medical technology systems challenging to CR program, to keep current; 6. 3. Commendations/Recommendations: 7. Faculty are very hard working throughout district and are applauded; 8. Director’s commitment is commended 9. 4. Program Budget/Funding Sources: 10. Dept of labor will fund a FT faculty, if we can find someone; 11. Funding is adequate at this time, but could use a supply budget to support minimal number of student supplies; 5. Program Goals/Plans: Work with IR for better data; Look at skills levels for student evaluation; Find and Hire a F/T person 1. 2. 3. Additional Comments: Students get entry level jobs and are able to move up to management; Place to get foot in door; many students go on to become nurses; This program is currently not required to be a medical assistant; however, this is changing, along with paramedic programs; Process: PRC will forward completed Executive Summaries to program review authors. Authors will have two weeks to provide feedback and corrections on errors of fact and/interpretation PRC will forward Executive Summaries and authors response (if available) to the appropriate integrated planning committee and the CPC. 6. Student Success/Achievement Basic Skills obstacles/challenges: Need very few skills to enter program; Math minimum is basic skill level; Need to be analyzed; High success rates, but difficult to interpret data, because many courses are free-standing, so the program gets a variety of students, who are not enrolled in the MA program; Process: PRC will forward completed Executive Summaries to program review authors.
