Anth,Soc,NAS College of the Redwoods Program Review Committee Executive Summary Adopted November 6, 2009 Mission Statement The College of the Redwoods’ Program Review Committee leads and facilitates authentic assessment as it relates to student success and planning at the institution for all subject and service areas. The committee reviews Annual and Comprehensive Program Reviews that provide the strong foundation upon which College of the Redwoods develops, identifies, states and documents quality improvement plans and goals including providing the direction of prioritization of funding, and support needs as organized under the strategic planning objectives. Objective: To provide an evaluative Executive Summary of this program’s review for authors, the Integrated Planning Committees, and the District. Summary and Recommendations: 1. Program strengths: Extremely strong retention rates across all three disciplines; Associate Faculty in sociology building cohesive community and sharing resources; Additional Comments: 4. 2. Program challenges/obstacles: Facilities – need updated audio-visual Need updated classrooms (particularly with respect to computers); Discipline specific supplies updated; Soc, NAS, and ANTH need access to technology to create pdf files from hard copies on-the-spot; Sociology/NAS full-time faculty; Students without basic college writing are getting into most, if not all, courses and are not successful; Social work classes listed as sociology, but do not fit in Sociology. Need to create a human services program; DN: Lacking library and DVD materials to support faculty; Need for PDF library for student access 5. 3. Commendations/Recommendations: Associate Faculty in sociology building cohesive community and sharing resources; Process: PRC will forward completed Executive Summaries to program review authors. Authors will have two weeks to provide feedback and corrections on errors of fact and/interpretation PRC will forward Executive Summaries and authors response (if available) to the appropriate integrated planning committee and the CPC. Program Goals/Plans: To move social work classes to a Human Services program; Create a PDF library for student access; Purchase printer, scanner, copier for division (that can create PDFs through scanning) Faculty for Addiction Studies/Soc and NAS/SOC 6. Program Outcomes Assessment (PLOs/SLOs): Anthropology assessment moving along and improving; NAS need full-time faculty to assess Assessment training needed for new faculty 7. Student Success/Achievement Basic Skills obstacles/challenges: Success rate of students without basic skill have a low success rate; Make English 150 a pre-requisition, since it correlates directly to student success and retention; In the past Anth 100 was linked to English 150 and it worked really well; but is not regularly offered; Good learning community opportunity; Process: PRC will forward completed Executive Summaries to program review authors.
