Discussion:
1. Erik Kramer asks for more detailed explanation of how this course satifies the requirements for an Area E
course. Will Meriwether explains that this course focuses on understanding cultural and historical contexts
around the world as they interact with institutions both economically and politically. Erik's general concern
is how much of the course focuses on global understanding. Will says that in teaching this course, quite a bit
of time would be devoted to discussing how international organizations (including states, corporations, and
state-like groups) influence policy decisions and interpret the actions of other groups in a global context.
2. Sean Herrera-Thomas reads from Academic Senate's language for Area E "course shall be designed to
provide a student with the ability to analyze the complexity of diversity through the perspective of
differential power and privilege, identity politics, and/or multicultural studies." Will confirms that the
central themes of the course address these perspectives.
3. George Potamianos clarifies that the course purpose is not to look at world problems through lens of US
foreign policy. Will confirms that it looks at modern world problems from a very macro level, even outside
the United States--focused on true global issues and students will be looking at issues from multiple national
perspectives.
4. Erik Kramer asks for clarification about how the course addresses different national and cultural perspectives.
Will provides examples of discussion topics such as how different cultures perceive a woman wearing a
burka.

Discussion:
1. George Potamianos asked if the course outcome is for students to produce an education plan, why isn’t
creating an education plan a required assessment activity. A consensus was reached that as long as skills are
developed to increase a student’s ability to complete an education plan, that there is no inconsistency
between the outcome and the representative assessment activity.
