REDWOODS COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT Minutes of the Meeting of the Curriculum Committee Eureka: 7351 Tompkins Hill Road, SSA 202 Del Norte: 883 W. Washington Boulevard, Office E7 December 11, 2015 Members Present: Marla Gleave (Ex-Officio), Michelle Haggerty, Sean Herrera-Thomas, Erik Kramer, Harry Pyke, Ruth Rhodes, Franz Rulofson, Gary Sokolow. Members Absent: 1. Call to Order: Curriculum Committee Chair, Michelle Haggerty, called the meeting to order at 1:06 p.m. 2. Introductions and Public Comment: There were no public comments at this time. 3. Approval of the Minutes: Gary Sokolow moved to approve the minutes of the Nov. 13, 2015 meeting, seconded by Erik Kramer. There being no objections, the minutes were approved as written. 4. Discussion Item 4.1 CR General Education Requirements The Academic Senate has been working on language to help clarify what types of courses can fit in Area E Multicultural Understanding. There are three themes that must be threaded throughout the proposal. Michelle Haggerty thinks that the language is broad enough for interpretation. Erik Kramer suggested adding after the first sentence adding “In addition” to make it clear it’s also a part of the requirement. Marla Gleave suggested moving the last part of the paragraph toward the beginning and then moving the language about the course being approved for another GE area toward the end. Sean Herrera-Thomas asked for the process for this being approved. Academic Senate has finished their work and forwarded this description to College Council. College Council will be sending it out for 30-day review and feedback. Juana Tabares pointed out that language previously included in Area D3, that a student must demonstrate competency in math, has been removed from the AP. This would allow a student to graduate without completing a math course. Title 5 regulations specifically require math and writing competency. Erik Kramer said that was part of the architecture to allow non-math classes to be approved for Area D3. Michelle Haggarty said there is also discussion about this and a note needs to be added that a student has to prove math competency. Michelle Haggerty will forward today’s feedback to College Council. 5.
