Discussion:
1. Erik Kramer asked what percentage of this course covers multicultural concepts. Peter Blakemore said that
this course is about culture and you can’t teach environmental ethics without teaching a variety of cultures.
This course is all about culture, economics, and identity.
2. Erik Kramer asked how what percentage of the course covers scientific concepts. Peter Blakemore said this
course is not a science course and never has been. It is a humanities course.
3. Michelle Haggerty asked how this course will articulate with other institutions to meet outside GE patterns.
Franz Rulofson said that when Area E first started it was required that the course would have to fulfill HSU’s
diversity requirement so that students would not have to take additional units to meet the transfer
institution’s requirements.
4. Peter Blakemore said part of the reason to put this course is proposed for Area E is that this course
promotes an understanding of diversity and culture. It gives students more exposure to diversity than other
course. This course is primarily about how cultures understand environment and how they create their
value systems based on that.
5. Sean Herrera-Thomas did look at the general educations of other California community colleges and every
school is doing something slightly different. There is no coherent model across northern California so it
really is up to us what we decided to approve for Area E. He asked what do we want our student to learn.
He does think this course is beneficial because it helps people understand the world through diverse lenses.
The challenge is up to us to get it figured out.

2. Rianne Connor said there is no way to notify a student that if the course is taken as pass/no pass it will
transfer as a “C” grade.

With the following revisions:
1. Michelle Haggerty asked if this is normally a lower division course. Ruth Rhodes said it is a lower division
course because it is so broad. There are 80 colleges that offer it as a lower division course. This is not a
lower division course at HSU.
2. Sean Herrera-Thomas said that students that transfer to HSU as juniors with the ADT have to take have to
take some of HSU lower division courses as juniors. The English department is trying to open up
communication with HSU to fix this issue.

With the following revisions:
1. Sean Herrera-Thomas said that one way to frame the current revision to this course is to recognize the fact
that CR has fewer course offerings in literature. Large community colleges are able to offer specialized
literature courses. He said that when you look at American literature what we are seeing is that this is no
longer dressing up a traditional course with untraditional voices. Now there are multiple voices and
examining culture. This course is to reflect the best intentions of a multicultural education.
2. Erik Kramer said that we need to be careful as an all Caucasian committee how diversity is approached. The
committee needs to be cognizant that there could be criticism.
3. Sean Herrera-Thomas said the way this outline is written, any faculty teaching this course would have to
teach from a multicultural perspective.

2. Elizabeth Carlyle said the objectives are from an external certification program. This course will prepare
students to take the test.
3. Elizabeth Carlyle said there are many students that are on the waiting list for the nursing program and this
course would give students something to do for work while they wait to be admitted into the program.
4. The recommended prep of HO-151 would help a student that has no medical background be successful in
this course.
5. The nursing department asked this course be developed as a noncredit course.
6. This course would prepare a student to be a medical scribe locally. This course is a more in-depth training.
