By serving as the professional association for political science scholars and practitioners, we view scholarship in and the practice of political science as knowing not what conditions exist, but what they mean. It is not memory but judgment that guides us in our professional endeavors. Guided by this year’s conference theme, The 2012 Election: Revisiting the State of the Republic, we will strive to foster dialogue across the various subfields in political science and among faculty, practitioners and students. In this spirit and in an effort to continue the association’s promotion of rigorous research, insightful teaching and collegiality in political science, I want to welcome each of you to this year’s Oklahoma Political Science Association annual meeting at Cameron University. Sincerely, Tony Wohlers, Ph.D. Program Chair Cameron University The 2012 Election: Revisiting the State of the Republic 1 AWA R D S BEST GRADUATE PAPER Honors a graduate student who has written the best paper as determined by the OPSA Award Committee. The 59,020 acre Refuge hosts a rare piece of the past - a remnant of mixed grass prairie, an island where the natural grasslands escaped destruction because the rocks underfoot defeated the plow. The Refuge provides habitat for large native grazing animals such American bison, Rocky Mountain elk, prairie dogs and white-tailed deer. Texas longhorn cattle also share the Refuge rangelands as a cultural and historical legacy species. More than 50 mammal, 240 bird, 64 reptile and amphibian, 36 fish, and 806 plant species thrive on this important refuge. Mount Scott provides a scenic drive to the second highest point in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. The 2012 Election: Revisiting the State of the Republic 13 The Holy City of the Wichita’s 580-429-3361 http://www.theholycitylawton.com Located in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, this 66acre area looks much like Israel during Biblical times, and is the site of the nation’s longest running Easter passion play, “The Prince of Peace.” Attendance reached an all-time high in 1939 when 225,000 visitors filled Audience Hill for the sunrise performance. Other attractions include a memorial for the victims of the Oklahoma City bombing, a Veterans Walkway, and the World Chapel, which has become a popular wedding locale. The Meers Store and Restaurant 580-429-8051 http://www.meersstore.com/ Located in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, it is home of the “Best Burger in Oklahoma”. Once a bustling town of miners seeking gold in the Wichita Mountains, all that remains of the town of Meers now is our world renowned family restaurant of the same name. Meers population has dwindled from the gold rush peak of 500 down to the present residents: one family of six people, eight cats and a dog. The Meers Store and Restaurant has became famous for our Meersburger, a 7” diameter burger made exclusively from prize winning Texas Longhorn beef raised on the family’s own ranch. Beef that is actually lower in cholesterol than chicken!” 14 OKLAHOMA POLITICAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION - ANNUAL MEETING - CAMERON UNIVERSITY Medicine Park- America’s Cobblestone Community http://www.medicinepark.com/ Medicine Park is located at the main entry to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, the second most visited wildlife refuge in the country - hosting more than 1.5 million annual visitors.
