Cameron history students bring home
awards
Two Cameron University history students earned awards at the recent annual Oklahoma Association of
Professional Historians/Phi Alpha Theta National Honor Society regional conference, hosted by Oklahoma
Christian University. The students contended in the student paper competition against approximately 60
other students from around Oklahoma.
Kyle Lewis, a junior history major from Lawton, won first place in the undergraduate non-U.S. history
category for his paper, “The End of Legalized Slavery in Saudi Arabia.”
Gayle Wiginton, a December 2007 history graduate from Cache, tied for third place in the U.S. history
undergraduate category for her paper “Confederate Ladies’ Gunboat Societies and the Vessels They
Financed.”
The students were accompanied by Cameron faculty members Mark J. Stegmaier, Ph.D., Professor of
History and Government; Sarah Eppler Janda, Ph.D., Associate Professor of History & Government; and
Russell Graves, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of History and Government.
The trip was paid for by the James O. “Diz” and June Pursley Barnett Endowed Lectureship in History.
