For Immediate Release – Lawton, OK, March 14, 2007 Cameron chooses Nigh Scholarship recipient for leadership ability, public service efforts Senior Amanda Srejma has been selected as Cameron’s recipient of the George and Donna Nigh Public Service Scholarship award for her exceptional leadership skills and her public service interests. Srejma received a $1,000 scholarship for the Spring 2007 semester. As the recipient of the scholarship, Srejma represented Cameron at the George and Donna Nigh Leadership Academy, a weekend-long leadership event held in February in Oklahoma City. Gov. Brad Henry, members of the Oklahoma Legislature and business leaders from across the state participated in the academy. Srejma is a senior biology major with a concentration in cellular and molecular biology and minors in chemistry and psychology. As President of the Biology Club, Srejma has made a significant impact as the key leader of the organization. “Amanda is a natural leader and has a personality that is infectious, easily motivating others to find the excitement and drive within themselves to be successful,” said Carla Guthridge, Ph.D., CU Associate Professor of biological sciences. “In the way that she lives her life, Amanda sets an incredible example of how hard work and determination pay off in meeting one’s goals.” -more- nigh, ADD ONE Srejma is also a member of Cameron’s Beta Beta Beta, the biological honor society and was chosen as one of 20 students in the state to be a part of the Ideas Networking for Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) summer research internship to be held this summer at the OU Health Sciences Center. She plans to graduate in May 2008 and expects to become a physician scientist. “I am in the process of applying for the opportunity to earn a combined M.D./Ph.D. degree in which I will work as a physician scientist, taking research from the bed to the lab bench and back again,” said Srejma. “In this capacity, I will facilitate the combined efforts of physicians, researchers, and political officials to make leading medical technology available to community members more rapidly and less expensively.” Srejma graduated from Reeds Springs High School in Missouri. She is the daughter of Bob and Cindy Srejma. The George and Donna Nigh Public Service Scholarship was created to provide opportunities for students who are preparing for careers in public service, as well as giving those students a chance to interact with each other and the state’s governing officials at the leadership academy. Each college and university in Oklahoma can nominate a participant for the scholarship program, which was established in 1999. The program honors former Gov. George Nigh and his wife as a tribute to their extensive involvement in public service and education.
