CU professor’s documentary honored
A documentary by Cameron University Association Professor Matt Jenkins, Ph.D., recently received an
Award of Excellence at the 2005 Berkeley Video & Film Festival.
Entitled “You Bet We’re Going Back to Sea: The Story of the S.S. John W. Brown,” the documentary tells
the continuing story of the SS John W. Brown, one of many Liberty Ships which were referred to as the
“cargo carrying key to victory” for their invaluable service during World War II.
“The Brown is more than just one of the last remaining Liberty Ships,” Jenkins said. “She is a living
memorial to those who served and sacrificed their lives for freedom. It is my hope that this documentary
stands a testament to life of this great ship and those who served on it.”
Charles Stanley, a Cameron recruiter served as director of photography on the documentary, and James
Stanley, a CU communication graduate, was the aerial videographer and narrator for the production.
As a member of the Cameron communications faculty, Jenkins has earned numerous awards for his
directing and film work. He is also the 2001 recipient of the prestigious Harold and Elizabeth Hackler Award
for Teaching Excellence.
The Berkeley Video and Film Festival was created in 1991 to provide a venue for independent video and
filmmakers creating works that challenge and confront notions of electronic cinema.
