Cameron University speech and debate team
leaves Lubbock with sweepstakes awards
Can you argue with the best? The Cameron University speech and debate team can.
The CU team recently traveled to Lubbock, Texas, to compete in the “Lubbock or Leave It” tournament
hosted by Texas Tech University.
Cameron successfully captured the fourth place overall sweepstakes award, along with fourth place overall
individual events sweepstakes and fifth place debate sweepstakes. The awards placed the team among the
top five schools at the competition, which featured more than 20 other universities.
Cameron competed against numerous marquee speech and debate institutions, including the University of
Central Oklahoma, Truman State University, Texas Tech University, the University of South Carolina and
Rice University. Students debated world events and developed effective hypothetical plans to deal with
current-day issues.
Sarah Collins, a junior speech communications major from Lawton, captured fifth place in persuasive
speaking and second place in communication analysis. Jonathan Hooks, a freshman speech
communications major from Duncan, placed fifth in prose.
