Cameron, Great Plains Technology Center
to sponsor criminal justice summer academy
Area secondary and college students interested in careers in law enforcement can gain hands-on
experience from the courtroom to crime scenes this summer during a criminal justice summer academy in
Lawton.
Cameron University and the Great Plains Technology Center will jointly sponsor the academy, set for June
7-11. The academy allows students to explore careers and gain skills in basic law enforcement, forensic
science, narcotics and terrorism investigation.
The program will include demonstrations by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Oklahoma State
Bureau of Investigation, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Lawton Police Department and the Fort Sill Provost
Marshal’s Office.
The first day of the academy will be held on the Cameron campus, 2800 W. Gore Blvd. Day two will take
place at the Great Plains Technology Center campus, 4500 W. Lee Blvd. The remainder of the academy
will consist of field excursions to locations around the Lawton area.
Participants will tour a Lawton firing range and the GEO correctional facilities, as well as witness a mock
trial. They will observe a SWAT weapons demonstration and see how narcotics and bomb sniffing dogs are
handled.

The enrollment fee for the academy is $35 and includes five meals and an academy t-shirt. Attendance is
limited to high school juniors and seniors from Comanche County area and Big Pasture schools, and to
Cameron freshmen and sophomores majoring in criminal justice.
Two hours of college credit is available to Cameron students and to high school juniors and seniors who
are concurrently enrolled in college classes. Those students should enroll in “Special Problems in Criminal
Justice” (Course CJ2002, Call No. 0389). College tuition for the course is $210 and includes materials.
The academy is limited to 40 students. An enrollment and orientation session is scheduled for May 27 at
GPTC.
