Criminal Justice Summer Academy set
for this summer at Cameron University
A Criminal Justice Summer Academy will take place from Monday, June 20, to Friday, June 24, at
Cameron University and the Great Plains Technology Center. The academy is open to high school juniors
and seniors in Comanche County and Big Pasture High School, as well as Cameron students enrolled in
the criminal justice program.
Cameron University, the Great Plains Technology Center and Western Oklahoma State College, are
partnering to present the academy which will serve as an introduction to students interested in having
careers in law enforcement, corrections, firefighting, emergency medical technician and security.
Academy participants will have a chance for hands-on sessions in police and firefighting techniques,
forensics, law in the courtroom corrections, and security operations. During the forensics session of the
academy, members of Lawton’s police and fire departments will simulate a narcotics investigation, a
homicide and a fire that destroys evidence.
There will also be a mock trial conducted by Comanche County District Judge David Lewis, tours of local
correctional facilities and demonstrations of SWAT team weapons and bomb-sniffing dogs, both of which
will take place at the Lawton Firing Range. The academy will conclude with a presentation of certificates of
completion.

The academy will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and will be held at Cameron University on the first day and
the Great Plains Technology Center the rest of the week. The cost for the academy is $50 which will
provide participants transportation, a night of lodging, meals and a souvenir shirt.
Cameron is offering two hours of college credit for students who qualify. Tuition is $115 per credit hour in
addition to the $50 enrollment fee. Space is limited and students must enroll by June 10.
