Cameron University students win AITP honors
Cameron University’s student chapter of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP)
brought home awards for banner and database design during the ninth annual National AITP Collegiate
Conference. Eleven CU students and two instructors attended the conference, held April 1-4 in Omaha,
Neb.
AITP is a professional organization that holds the conference each spring specifically for college students
nearing graduation and who need to show off technical skills to potential employers. This year’s conference
featured 10 competition areas, a number of information technology-related workshops, a recruiting event
and a formal awards banquet. The conference attracted 85 colleges, technical schools and universities.
The Nebraska trip was funded through a grant from the Southwestern Bell Endowed Lectureship in
Technology at Cameron.
The Cameron AITP student chapter won first place for technical merit in the banner contest. Another CU
team comprised of management information system majors Sharon Holcombe and Monique Sampson
received honorable mention in database design competition.
The chapter’s advisors, technology instructor Greg Henry and business instructor Dave Smith, are proud of
the dedication and hard work that their students exhibited during the project.
“Their professionalism, positive attitude and eagerness to participate in this unique professional
development experience are to be commended,” Henry said. “They set a wonderful example of
professional involvement for underclassmen, Southwest Oklahoma and information technology
professionals everywhere. So far, two of our seniors who will graduate in May have received employment
offers because of the recruiting event and several others were contacted to schedule further interviews.”
Joining Sampson, a senior from St. Peter’s Parish, St. Kitts & Nevis, and Holcombe, a senior from
Lawton, at the conference were computer information systems majors Robin Lee, a senior from Frederick;
seniors Jill Aitson, Dave Collins and Zena Sanchez, and junior Jason Mitchell, all from Lawton; Trae
Norman, a junior from Walters; Nelson Rosa, a senior from Carolina, Puerto Rico; Jackie Williams, a
senior from St. George’s, Granada; and junior McGavin James from Castries, St. Lucia.
