Department of Modern Languages – Vision and Mission Statement The Department of Modern Languages contributes to the University’s mission to offer a world­class education that provides personalized experiences and lifetime learning opportunities. The Department provides a quality education that facilitates the academic, professional and personal growth of its students, so that they can meet the challenges of living and working in a complex global society. The Department fulfills this mission by: • Preparing foreign language teachers who demonstrate linguistic and cultural proficiency, knowledge of current teaching methods, and the ability to integrate technology effectively into classroom instruction. • Helping students develop the attitudes, knowledge and skills that enable them to communicate across cultures effectively, so that they can be active participants in other cultures. • Providing opportunities for study abroad that contribute to students’ linguistic development and cultural competence. • Offering courses that allow students to interact with other cultures across time, through the study of literature, culture and civilization. • Serving the needs of students in all colleges by offering courses that help them integrate the study of foreign languages into other disciplines.
