Stephanie Sarabia presented the strong recommendation of Melody Hyppolite for
reappointment. The Unit supported her recommendation unanimously.
Eva Ogens made a presentation entitled “Introduction to Next Generation Science Standards”
which will be required in New Jersey elementary, middle and high schools.
Dean Lorenz wants to use the glass cabinets on the renovated 2nd Fl. G-Wing to showcase
research, publications and announcements of upcoming conferences, etc. that SSHS faculty
are involved in, as well as faculty/student research. Please send color copies of articles, texts
for display.
Nick Salter and Marta Vides-Saade are the SSHS members of the Library Task Force. A bond
proposal has been initiated for needed capital to make library renovations and learning
center additions. A plan for this improvement project is online. Please review and if you
have suggestions regarding the plan let Nick or Marta know. The final report on the library
expansion goes to the Faculty Assembly on April 20th. The proposal goes to the Board of
Trustees in June.
Paul Reck and the Sociology Convening Group expressed concerns about the continuation of
the 3 day a week class schedule. It is suggested that student energy and attendance have
been compromised and that it has also been the cause of lower student enrollment. It is
recommended that a student survey be done to get student feedback. There is also concern
about the number of events that the Center for Success, transfer student events and
Admission Open House impose on the faculty. Faculty commute to campus long distances on
non-teaching days and find few or no potential students at these events.
Dean Lorenz announced that the administration is interested in additional graduate programs
and asked the Deans to come up with suggestions for future graduate programs. Dean Lorenz
suggested three – a Masters in Public Health, a Masters in Counseling and a Masters in
Homeland/National Security. Faculty raised some concerns regarding the impact this would
have on the undergraduate program, if the administration would provide adequate faculty
lines, and since this area of Northern New Jersey is saturated with numerous colleges with
competing graduate programs, would a market analysis be done to justify these programs.
