Oct. 3, 2014 More than 1,000 Celebrate Homecoming at COD A combination of ideal weather, good food and family fun helped fill the stands with Chaparral Pride at College of DuPage’s first Homecoming in nearly 40 years. The event, held Sept. 27, featured the COD Chaparrals taking on the Georgia Military College Bulldogs. The day’s festivities began with an alumni brunch and tailgate party, with free hotdogs, chips and drinks, as well as Chappy “tattoos,” face painting, pom pons and a wide variety of (very loud) noisemakers. The Spirit Team led the crowd in cheering the Chaps on, while members of the National Guard and the Wounded Warrior Project were on hand to honor COD football players and military veterans Matt Fletcher and Evan Kirk. Earlier in the week, COD students and employees participated in several contests activities as part of Spirit Week, including a pep rally, photo booth and Chappy Olympics. Jerry Brown's decision to sign into law a bill to create a pilot program that will pave the way for the country's largest community college system to offer four-year degrees. Meanwhile, the Illinois Community College President's Council will this week consider a similar proposal. "If you have an unmet labor need, but there is no training, this just makes sense," said College of DuPage President Dr. Robert L. Breuder, who is leading the effort in Illinois for similar legislation and is featured in the U.S. News & World Report article. Pink-Tastic! In less than two weeks, College of DuPage employees exceeded this year’s goal and raised $2,470 during Lee Denim Days® in the fight against breast cancer. Thanks to COD Cares for organizing this year’s donation – and THANK YOU to all of the generous Team COD members (both pictured and anonymous donors) who made a difference in the lives of millions of women and their loved ones across the country. Lee Denim Days® supports the efforts of The American Cancer Society. Over the past two decades, The American Cancer Society has contributed to a 34 percent drop in the breast cancer mortality rate and a 20 percent decline in the overall cancer mortality rate over the past two decades. The “Team COD” donation page will remain active through Dec. 31. Engineering Experiences Engineering students John Batke (left) of Wheaton and Aaron Carstens of Warrenville spent their summers learning new skills at prestigious internships at Fermilab and for DuPage County. Batke served an internship at Fermilab in Batavia, through the national laboratory’s Community College Intern program. He spent his days this summer in Fermilab’s silicon detector research facility as part of a team acquiring and analyzing data that will help optimize silicon photomultiplier single-photon counting detectors for the focal surface of a high-tech space telescope that will be attached to the International Space Station. Batke is enrolled in COD’s Pathways to Engineering program, which provides guaranteed admission for qualified students to the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Carstens spent his summer very much down-to-earth. With plans to pursue a career as a civil engineer, Carstens served his internship at DuPage County’s Division of Transportation. According to Carstens, his duties during the internship dealt primarily with the county road system, including surveying roads, creating cost estimates for resurfacing, performing traffic counts, adjusting traffic signal timing and performing bridge inspections.
