Debbie Hasse, program manager at College of DuPage, said the billing and coding field is seeing growth as the number of medical codes will increase from 14,000 to 72,000 in 2014. Jan. 18, 2013 President Breuder Celebrates Four Years Despite the challenges of declining state funding and a struggling national economy, College of DuPage continued to thrive in 2012. Successes included the development or implementation of 19 new degree and certificate programs, enhancement of its award winning 3+1 program that offers an option for bachelor's degrees earned at COD at significantly reduced cost, and the continued $550 million transformation of its teaching and learning facilities. During a recent campus address, President Robert L. Breuder reflected on 2012 and forecasted another strong year for the College. Click here to watch highlights from Dr. Breuder's remarks. “Over the last year, we have strengthened this institution, continuing to build on our academic programming and further enhancing this campus to position ourselves as one of the top community colleges in the country,” Dr. Breuder said. “These enhancements, along with several other initiatives, distinguish College of DuPage from its peers, attracting students who are selecting COD as their first college of choice.” Read More COD, Career Step Offer Online Health Training Continuing Education/Extended Learning at College of DuPage has partnered with Career Step to provide online health career training programs designed to provide skills for a quick transition into the workforce. Because of the format, students can study at their own pace and at any time that fits their schedules, said Cristina Willard, program development specialist at COD. Some programs can be completed in as little as three months. “This training is based upon getting people to work right away in professions that are in need of employees,” she said. Programs include Inpatient and Outpatient Medical Coding and Billing, in which students learn to translate medical records into standardized codes that are used to bill patients and thirdparty payers. Read More HEC Earns LEED Certification The Homeland Security Education Center at College of DuPage has earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The HEC, designed by Legat Architects and Brubaker Design, prepares firefighters, police personnel and other first responders for man-made and natural disasters as well as international and domestic terrorist acts. High-performance features of the HEC decrease the center’s energy use by 23 percent when compared with a standard building of similar size. “Selection of environmentally-friendly materials played an important role in the LEED certification,” said Jay Johnson, AIA, architectural project manager. “For instance, the colorful metal panels contain recycled content, the undulating glass curtain wall fills the corridor with natural light, and the overall wall system optimizes energy efficiency. On the interior, we specified Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified bamboo on doors, event space flooring, wall panels and laboratory casework.” Read More COD, Daily Herald Host Career Fair COD and sponsor The Daily Herald will host a series of free job preparation workshops culminating in a Career Fair on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in SRC 2000. KUDOS to...COD employees Sandy Heinemann and Rose Pribich who recently exemplified service excellence for a student who needed assistance getting her grades posted prior to accepting a “dream job offer.” Through many phone calls and emails between all parties involved, they met the deadline for the student, who thanked them with this note: “This is a time when words fail me. I cannot express my gratitude for your support and for going above and beyond anything I could imagine. From the bottom of my heart, thank you, and I will never forget your acts of kindness making my graduation possible.” More Kudos to…Associate Professor Charles Vanderwarf and his Respiratory Care colleagues. The program recently received a notice from the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC), which deemed that the program “has met or exceeded all currently set thresholds for success on each of the required outcome measures.” Congratulations!
