March 29, 2013 Stop by the Bee at COD The 25th annual Illinois State Geography Bee will be held at COD on Friday, April 5, in SRC 2000, on the College's main campus. Community members are invited to attend the final round at 12:15 p.m. Earl Dowling, Associate Vice President of Student Affairs, will provide a welcome to the more than 100 middle-school participants, their parents and judges. Read More Cuisine de Cook-Off The inaugural COD Cook-Off captured the interest of cafeteria patrons, as three teams competed for best dishes prepared with five surprise ingredients: French fried onions, beef tenderloin, artichokes, caramel sauce and blood oranges. A student team with members Brian Vincent and Bayani Acuesta prevailed, with judges (including President Robert L. Breuder and Culinary Coordinator Chris Thielman) citing the team’s “original sauces, unexpected flavors and textures, and presentation” as the reason for their success. COD, IDES Partner in Lombard College of DuPage and the Illinois Department of Employment Security Office in Lombard recently hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony (above) to celebrate a new partnership that will help the unemployed and underemployed with their short- and long-term career goals. I know it will be a great success.” Read More Jennifer Hereth Named 2013 Woman of Distinction The COD Women's Studies Committee has selected Art Professor Jennifer Hereth as the 2013 Adade Wheeler Woman of Distinction. Hereth was honored at a reception at the College on Wednesday, March 20, which featured guest speaker Dr. Nilda Flores-Gonzalez, Associate Professor of Sociology and Latin American and Latino Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. New Space, New Look for Fashion Program Formerly located in the McAninch Arts Center, the Fashion Studies program recently moved into its new home on the first floor of the Student Resource Center. With additional classroom space, better lighting and improved display areas, the space allows the program to show off its style while providing for enrollment growth. “We now have more visibility on campus, and the students just love the new amenities,” said Sharon Scalise, program coordinator. “We’re also attracting more visitors, as people can walk down from the Bookstore and view our displays.” Read More U.S. Bank to Host Ribbon Cutting for New COD Site U.S. Bank will host a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, April 9, at 11 a.m. to celebrate the opening of its new location in the SRC near Starbucks. Read More PLANET Prizewinners Horticulture students (left to right) Ed Adamczyk, Christian Garcia, Anthony Jones, Taylor Hall, Felix Vogele and Chris Watkins competed in the recent Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) Student Career Days Competition at Auburn University. Jones earned fourth place in Skid Steer Operation; Jones and Garcia earned ninth place in Hardscape Installation; Vogele placed 13th in Interior Landscape Design; Adamczyk and Hall took 14th in Wood Construction; Adamczyk, 16th in Construction Cost Estimating; Watkins, 18th in Leadership Skills; and Adamczyk, Hall and Jones, 20th in Landscape Plant Installation. Triple Kudos to…the Office of High School Partnerships: Last month, the team held a special session of their Student Leadership Academy with a focus on interviewing skills for 165 students from 16 district high schools. Seventeen COD employees served as the interviewers for this learning opportunity in conjunction with cosponsors Lewis University and the Illinois Institute of Technology who hosted the interview sessions at their campuses. In addition, Elmhurst College and DeVry University provided support for the Academy during the year. Special kudos to Danice McGrath and Evelyn Spagnuolo who coordinated this valuable outreach program. In addition…on March 1, COD hosted the annual Counselor Institute Day for middle school and high school guidance counselors in District 502. Several breakout session presentations were given by COD faculty, staff and administrators representing Academic Affairs, Admissions and Outreach, Continuing Education/ Extended Learning, the Academic Discipline Divisions, and the Office of High School Partnerships. A new attendance record was set, with 278 counselors enjoying the day. Special kudos to event coordinators Danice McGrath and Julie Marlatt. Lastly, on March 8, 204 high school students representing Addison Trail, Glenbard East, Neuqua Valley, Naperville Central and Lyons Township high schools, as well as the Technology Center of DuPage, attended the Law, Public Safety, and Corrections Career Day at the College’s Homeland Security Education Center. Breakout sessions were led by COD faculty and guests representing employers and agencies (including the FBI, the Coroner's Office, FEMA, and police patrol units) also attended. Special kudos to the Criminal Justice and Fire Science programs, the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy, and the Office of High School Partnerships. A High Note for ACT-SO Judges Students representing 25 area high schools placed in the DuPage County ACT-SO competition held recently at College of DuPage. More than 60 young men and women competed for top honors in Science, Business, Humanities, Performing Arts, and Visual Arts categories. COD Theater Workshop April 11 College of DuPage College Theater will host a workshop for prospective students from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 11, in K Building, Room 160. The free workshop includes opportunities to observe actors working scenes for an upcoming production of William Shakespeare's “Love's Labour's Lost” and participate in a workshop with Director and Theater Professor Amelia Barrett on the physicality of Shakespeare.
