Aug. 1, 2013 Waterleaf Earns 2013 Wine Spectator Award Waterleaf is one of just 10 restaurants in DuPage County to receive the prestigious “2013 Award of Excellence” from Wine Spectator Magazine. Wine Spectator's comprehensive World's Best Wine Lists has been compiled annually by the magazine since 1981. Entrants are considered for these awards from all 50 states and 65 countries worldwide (read more). Coming up on Saturday, Sept. 14, is the second annual Waterleaf Food & Wine Festival presented by the Daily Herald, which will feature more than 100 domestic and imported wines. COD Earns First in State in WxChallenge The only two-year school among approximately 60 institutions nationwide, COD finished first in Illinois and 13th nationwide in this year's Weather Challenge sponsored by the Weather Channel. Open to all graduate, undergraduate and Ph.D. students, as well as faculty, staff and alumni, the WxChallenge requires participants to forecast the maximum and minimum temperatures, precipitation and maximum wind speeds for select U.S. cities over a 10-week period. “This was the first year COD participated,” said Associate Meteorology Professor Vittorio Gensini. “It was a real commitment on their part because they had to do daily forecasts over several weeks.” Read More COD Supports Our Troops at 2013 Festival COD volunteers distributed wristbands to guests at the eighth annual Rockin' for the Troops Concert. New iPhone/iPad Developer Certificate COD is offering a new iPhone/iPad Developer Proficiency certificate program this fall that trains students to create applications for Apple’s mobile devices. Recently approved by the Illinois Community College Board, the program will provide skills for graduates to find entry-level positions as mobile application developers in a variety of work settings, including companies that specialize in computer and hand-held software development. “This is an opportunity for programmers who have a background in highlevel programming languages such a C, C++ or Objective C,” said John Kronenburger, Associate Dean of Technology. “What it takes to develop applications is a sound programming background, and this certificate provides a solid foundation.” Read More Glaser Named Top CFO by Business Ledger COD Senior Vice President for Administration and Treasurer Tom Glaser recently was named among this year’s CFOs of the Year by the Daily Herald Business Ledger. “Tom has played an integral role in the continued financial health of this College,” said COD President Robert L. The free program included presentations by Tom Roberts, Ph.D. (right) author of Psychedelic Future of the Mind, Bob Wold, founder of Cluster Busters and Sewick. In addition, Sewick is planning another free presentation, “Molecules, Mind-States and Mystical Experiences – Insights from Psychedelics,” on Nov. 16.
