Recycling at its Best
Students participating in New Student Orientation find an
original way to play life-size “Jenga” with their Subway
boxes following lunch. Approximately 1,200 students and
350 parents attended the day-long sessions, which were
offered three times last week. The programs, emceed by
COD Associate Speech Professor Chris Miller, included
a general introduction to College of DuPage as well as
three separate breakout sessions. Click here for a note
of thanks to volunteers from Student Life Manager
Chuck Steele. Click here for more photos.
Chappy Selfie
Volunteers from the inaugural Express Registration event
held last weekend take a moment to pose with Chappy
for a memorable photo. Several hundred prospective
students, parents and community members attended the
event, which included assistance with admissions,
registration and academic information, as well as games,
food and athletics (alumni men and women soccer
games and a football Green/White scrimmage) in
preparation for the Chaparrals’ upcoming season.

Chaparral Football Starts Aug. 30
Head Football Coach Matt Foster leads his team through
a practice to prepare for this year’s season, which kicks
off at home during a 1 p.m. game on Saturday, Aug. 30,
against Northeast Oklahoma Community College. Click
here for a Multimedia Services video about the
upcoming season. Coach Foster said the team is looking
forward to an exciting series and the resurgence of
homecoming, a football staple that hasn’t been observed
at the College in more than 40 years. “We have great
coaches and teachers and great chemistry as a team,”
he said. “Similar to any academic program, we want to
develop our students by presenting them with
challenges. That’s how they learn and that is how they
realize their true potential.” Read More
Board of Trustees Approves
Tuition Reduction for Spring
The College of DuPage Board of
Trustees unanimously approved a
proposal at its Aug. 21 regular
meeting to reduce tuition by $4 per
credit hour for the spring 2015
term. Based on a proposal
submitted to the Board by
President Robert L. Breuder last
month, the approved reduction will
lower tuition from $144 to $140 per
credit hour this spring. “Because
we have our fiscal house in order
and maintain a strong financial position, this is something we
are able to do for our students,” said Dr. Breuder, who noted
that this is the first time in the College’s history that tuition has
been reduced. “Barring a significant change in our financial
situation, I plan to recommend in the spring that we maintain
this rate for the 2015-2016 academic year.” Read More
Kudos to…Marketing Director Laurie
Jorgensen who is taking to the road
over the next several months to share
her expertise at several prestigious
conferences, including the CASE
Conference for Community College
Advancement in September (“Branding
and Enrollment”); the American
Marketing Association Symposium for the Marketing of
Higher Education in November (“Changing the
Conversation About Community College”); the CASE
District V Conference in December ((three-hour
branding master session with Chief Communications
Officer Nikia Reveal from OSU); and NCMPR’s 2015
national conference in March (“Changing the
Conversation About Higher Education”).
More Kudos to…Associate History Professor
Sam Mitrani who discussed “The Greatest Generation
and World War II” to the residents of Alden Gardens in
Bloomingdale. The residents were fully engaged and
appreciated sharing their memories and personal
experiences from that era.
More Kudos to…the NSO Team members who
received this poignant letter from a student after last
week’s experience: “Today I met a high school friend
who I met in my senior year of high school. She is two
grade levels younger than me. Though we were the
greatest of friends, we lost touch when I graduated.
When we saw each other today it was a nice surprise
and as we were both extremely happy to have been
reunited. NSO helped me meet an old friend and we are
both insanely excited about the new semester we are
about to start together. COD is a place that is loved by
many so therefore I do believe that it is the place where
you can find that person that you have lost contact with.
I know from many people that it is something that is
common at this school. I have never been so happy to
be a student at COD!”

Waterleaf Employee
Referral Program
Due to the success and popularity
of Waterleaf restaurant, General
Manager Jean Pierre Leroux is
searching to fill positions at the
College’s fine-dining establishment.
Jean Pierre – in conjunction with
Human Resources – has developed an Employee Referral
Program to assist in the successful staffing of the restaurant.
“Each day, I witness the service that is provided by all COD
employees to our students and community members. As such, it
makes sense to fill the open positions at Waterleaf with
recommendations from individuals who already know what it
means to provide the best in customer service. Excellent service
is at the heart of both Waterleaf’s and the College’s success,”
Leroux said. Please click here for details!
