Thomas “Earl” Reed New
Basketball Coach for Chaparrals
The College of DuPage men’s basketball
team officially starts its season Nov. 2, but
new Chaparral head Coach Earl Reed is
busy finalizing his roster and sizing up the
competition. Reed replaces Don Klaas, who
retired after 35 years as head coach. With a
practice schedule under way, Reed, who was
a member of Klaas’ coaching team, said he’s
having a relatively easy transition. “I feel
honored to take over for a coaching legend,” Reed said of Klaas.
“Right now we’re finalizing our roster and getting the team
together for practices, but I’m optimistic looking forward.”

Donors, Scholarship Recipients Get Together
COD student Kathrine Murphy of Oak Brook spoke at
the recent College of DuPage Foundation Scholarship
Reception. A recipient of both the Foundation Needs
Based and Returning Adult Student scholarships,
Murphy said that without financial assistance, her dream
of attending college wouldn't have been possible. “The
Foundation gave me the start I needed when I decided to
go to college at the age of 25,” she said. “(Donors) are
changing people's lives and these scholarships have given
me hope and direction.” The COD Foundation honored
both scholarship donors and recipients, giving them a
chance to interact and learn about one another during
this year’s reception. Please click here to view photos

Little Library Friends
Professor and Health Sciences Librarian Debra Kakuk
Smith reads a story about swaying and swinging to a rapt
group of COD’s youngest students. Last week, children
from the College’s 4- to 5-year-old preschool program
toured the Library, listened to a storybook and then
decorated “official” Friend of the Library certificates to
take home. Click here for information on the preschool
and kindergarten programs offered in the Early Childhood
Education Center on COD’s campus.
Pumpkin Pie Production Line
Publications Coordinator Jim Vosicky helps to peel
and stick labels on cans of pumpkin for the Sodexo
all-campus service project that benefited the
Northern Illinois Food Bank. More than 150 College
of DuPage employees volunteered their time on
Oct. 9 to pack 230,000 pounds of food that will
provide roughly 96,000 slices of delicious pumpkin
pie for hungry people throughout Illinois.

Kudos to… Marketing
and Communications
Specialist Jane Lelugas
and Marketing Director
Laurie Jorgensen, who
responded to a request
from Diane Boeger,
proud parent of COD
student Hannah, to
create a flag for display in
the Boeger Flag Garden in the family’s Overland Park, Kan.,
home. Though far from home, Hannah chose to attend
COD’s Early Childhood program after meeting students from
the College at a summer camp in Branson, Mo. Kudos to
Jane and Laurie for going above and beyond for this family.
More Kudos to…President Robert L. Breuder, who
was named among this year’s Distinguished Alumni by

management team on Oct. 15, which resulted in a partnership
between OSG and the College. Located in Bensenville, OSG is
a world leader in the production of cutting tools for the
manufacturing industry and is looking to COD to provide a
pipeline of skilled workers. Congrats, Jim!
And More Kudos to…Adult Admissions Representative
Angela Nackovic who received a note from a community
member thanking her for the “great information provided in
the seminar last night at the Thomas Ford Library…I have
thought about attending COD for years, and, after last night,
I will hold onto the dream to see if I can make it happen.”
Angela visits libraries regularly throughout District 502 to
provide prospective adult students with information about the
College. She has three more visits scheduled in October alone.
And More Kudos to…members of the COD men’s golf
team who won the Region IV Division III meet last weekend,
