Reading
Students are beginning to problem solve unknown words without appealing for help. They now
know to use pictures, the 1st sound, chunks and meaning to help them problem solve. We are
working not only on reading the words, but on understanding that words strung together make a
story. We have worked hard on reading and retelling stories in sequence to our reading buddies.
This is a great strategy to practice at home. Please remember to read 15 minutes each night.
Math
This week, students have practiced patterned story problems. Identifying the patterns help us
reason and think about how to problem solve. We have learned several new hands-on games, and
have been using 10 frames to help solidify this concept. Next week, we will start a unit on
measurement and geometry. As mathematicians, we are working hard to show our thinking in
pictures, numbers, and words.
Social Studies/Science:
We have been learning all about characteristics of living and non-living things. We have also
learned about what living things need and how their needs change depending on where they live
and what time of year it is. In the weeks to come, we will be learning about past and present.
Writing
We wrapped up our “How To” unit. Students worked hard to edit and revise their “how to” piece
that will be published and bound. We were so excited to mail out our class book and can’t wait
for it to be bound and shipped back. SO exciting to be published writers!
In SPELLING, we have been working on the long vowels that end in “e”. Over the next few
weeks, we will learn about long vowels that have 1 vowels (ie, ea, oa, ee and oo).
General Information
Please continue to have your child read every night for 15-20 minutes! Reading every night helps
build their stamina, as well as making them a better reader.
