Second Grade News Friday December 11, 2015 Dec. 18 - Winter Party Dec. 19 - Jan. 3 - Winter Break - Enjoy your time with family and friends! Happy Holidays! Reading/Writing Workshop This week we have continued our poetry study along with writing workshop. Students have been introduced to more forms of poems and have explored the aspects of word choice, syllables, and rhyme. Students extended their knowledge of poems to create a unique collection that will be published and sent home next week. We have also been refining the skills of inferencing and visualization as we take an in depth / close read of poems. Math Students spiraled back to skip counting this week. We focused on skip counting within the hundreds for this trimester. They learned a game called Target 1000. This would be a great game to play over the holidays! Students have learned several card games that can be played with a deck of cards. These games would be a nice addition to your family game night! We completed this unit on Friday with our unit test. We will spiral back to time next week. Students will be asked to read time to the nearest 5 minutes. Word Study This week in Word Study, students continued to practice their 12 spelling words with various activities (Graph a Word, 5-Box Practice, Word Search, and Look, Say, Cover, Check). Students were assessed over these words today. Please check Progress Book for grades. Social Studies This week students enjoyed “traveling” around the world and learning about how different countries celebrate the winter holidays in different ways.
