Together we learn, together we succeed, and together we will make a positive difference! Second Grade News Dec. 4 - Winter Wonderland 6-8:30pm Dec. 5 - Winter Wonderland 10am - 1pm Dec. 18 - Winter Party Friday December 4, 2015 Reading/Writing Workshop Students have been enjoying the world of Shel Silverstein with our study of poetry. We have been reading and analyzing aspects of poems with a focus on visualization and words authors use to give details. The children are also being exposed to a wide variety of poems. (Bio-Poems and Acrostic poems were two that we discussed this week). The children are applying these concepts with written expression and are creating their own collection of poems. Students have been discussing JUICY words during language arts. Adjectives and Adverbs are specifically being acknowledged so that the students are able to give a more elaborate written sentences. The children also enjoyed describing their Thanksgiving holiday with a Weekend News story. Students were able to sequence events use transitions to share traditions and memories. Math In math, students returned back to graphing. Thus trimester instead of reading graphs, they gathered data and created their own graphs. Students had to determine a good question that they would survey their peers. After determining their question, they were able to gather data. Students created both pictographs and bar graphs to display their data. Ask your child which answer had the most votes. Next week we will spiral back to skip counting numbers to a thousand, and take a test on skip counting Friday, December 11th. Word Study This week in Word Study, students were introduced to 12 new words. We are focusing on common suffixes (-ed and -er), homophones, identifying real life connections between words and their use, as well as continuing to practice commonly misspelled words. Students will be tested on the following 12 words on Friday, December 11th: of, from, our, saw, their, there, they’re, mailed, jumped, needed, reader, learner. Social Studies We began the week by reading a short passage about timelines. Students were encouraged to use the “close reading” strategy of underlining answers to comprehension questions found in the text. Second graders created their very own timeline of important inventions in history as well. They were assessed over their ability to create a timeline in sequential order using important dates from their own lives. We learned about the days of the week and the months of the year in Social Studies this week too! Students were tested over this (days of the week/months of the year) with an assessment on Friday.
