Together we learn, together we succeed, and together we will make a positive difference! Second Grade News Friday,April 1, 2016 March 30 - April 8 - Scholastic Book Fair April 7 & 8 - Breakfast with Buddies (formerly Moms and Muffins) April 11 - Wax Museum Reading/Writing Workshop Students have been involved with the genre of biographies. As a connection to our Famous Americans project students have been reading nonfiction selections about other famous people, selecting important facts and answering comprehension questions. Modeling note taking and research writing has also been part of the mini-lessons. We discussed plagiarism (copying) and the importance of reading to find facts. Comprehension will continue to be a focus for the students. Math - Students spiraled back to mental math this week. They enjoyed several hands on math activities that allowed them connect real world experiences to their work. Students should be able to mentally add a series of numbers in their head. We will be moving onto telling time to the nearest 15 minutes this trimester. Word Study- Second graders received a new word study list on Monday. These words focused on synonyms and antonyms and prefixes and suffixes. We took time to learn what each prefix and suffix means from the words on our word list. After this word study rotation, we will begin completing our end of the year Developmental Spelling Inventory as well as having each student read their K-2 high frequency words. Please make sure to continue to practice reading and writing high frequency words at home as these end of the year assessments are quickly approaching. Thanks for your home support! Social Studies- Our Famous American Biographies Unit is now in full swing in Social Studies! The students have loved transforming into researchers, and are learning so many interesting facts about their Famous American! We have worked very hard taking notes on our Famous American‛s importance, facts about their childhood and adulthood, and even more interesting, fun facts that caught our eye. We then turned these notes into our research paper first draft. Next week, we will create our final drafts, as well as speeches for our Wax Museum. Please make sure you are helping your child gather his/her Famous American costume. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child‛s teacher.
