Together we learn, together we succeed, and together we will make a positive difference! Second Grade News Friday,April 15th, 2016 April 28 - Take your Child to Work Day May 6 - Thomas Movie Night, 6pm Reading/Writing Workshop Students continue to apply 4 goals during reading time. Students have been making personal connections to enhance understanding. Checking for understanding is also an important part of comprehension. We have been having conversations as well as writing responses to what we have read. Students are also becoming experts with identifying the main idea and finding supporting details. Students are engaged with book selections, the purpose of reading , and in class comprehension assignments. During writing time students have been focusing on compound sentences. Math - Students revisited money this week. Students began the week by becoming acquainted again with coins and their value. They added groups of coins together and learned about the importance of a decimal when writing money into their notebooks. Students were then given some real life situations to solve in math. They entered “Dave‛s Diner” and needed to take customers orders and determine their total. By Friday, students created their own menus and were taking orders for their own restaurant! Students had a great time this week learning about money and can always use extra practice at home with this tricky topic. Word Study- Second graders read their K-2 high frequency words to their teacher this week. We were happy to see growth with many students and also happy to see many students were able to retain reading all their high frequency words correctly. Please make sure to continue to practice writing the K-2 high frequency words at home as students will be tested over these beginning Monday. Thanks for your home support! Social Studies- This week in Social Studies, students started off the week with our AMAZING Wax Museum presentations! The kiddos did an amazing job presenting what they‛ve learned with confidence. We hope you enjoyed visiting our museum on Monday! Throughout the rest of the week, we learned about how humans can both positively and negatively alter the physical environment. Students participated in a see/think/wonder thinking routine with a picture of a landfill, read aloud The Little House and reflected on how people changed the environment surrounding the little house, discussed the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) and applied those 3Rs to our personal life (and how we can improve both at home and school), and also read The Lorax. We will be wrapping up this unit next week.
