Anecdotal Comments Student Survey 2011-2012 If you feel that evening student needs are not being met, why not and how can it be improved? • Because the financial aid office is normally closed in the evening hours. It can be improved by staying open maybe an hour or two later to assist those who can't come to the college during the day • I feel that evening students’ needs are being met, but there are improvements that need to be taken into consideration. For example the lighting in the parking lot needs to be brighter, when I come to my 7:00 p.m. class the financial aid office and the admission office is already closed. If I have a question or problem I have to wait until the next day in order for my situation to be resolved. • There are limited hours of operation to counselors, library and all office staff. Scheduled evening hours a few days a week would be nice. • Mainly lighting on the Suffolk campus • All of the above are closed by the time I come into my classes at 7. Also when I leave, I make sure I walk out with someone else due to the lack of lighting. • A safer environment in the parking lot for when night classes are let out. • They need to start coming to class on time. If they do not meet then they should do day time classes. • Evening student needs are being met very well. Thank you • The library closed at 5 the last time I tried to visit in the evening. • Can't use the library and my classes start after 7:00 pm. Need better lighting in the parking lot it is very dark at night. • I have classes that start at 7:00 pm or later and I have no access to the library after 7pm. There are no counselors around at night. Then the parking lot and front area is rather dark I feel uncomfortable walking to my car at 9pm and the parking lot is dark. • I feel they are being met. • Have at least one person in the office that can answer questions that need to be addressed • Have at least one person in the office that can answer questions that need to be addressed • Staff need longer hours. If students work during the day with classes at night, who are they going to talk to? • The library is not opened long enough for the evening classes, because some evening classes don't get over with until 9:50, so if we needed to go to the library at about 8:00, we wouldn't be able to. • The financial aid office could be open later for students with night class. What could you not find in the library? • I can find everything needed. • As of right now my classes have not called for any research papers or me having to go and get information about a topic. • Usually I enjoy studying in the library; however, often it can be noisy. Sometimes I am not able to find a quiet place to study. • I haven't really used the library yet. • Everything was there • A certain book was out at the time. • I honestly have not been to the library yet, so I do not know. • Computer Software What suggestions do you have to improve services? • Get a security guard for those who have evening and/or night classes. • The only suggestion I have to improve services would to improve security. • When large class room needs to be adjusted to fit all students! Lounge was dirty. Computer lab staff not very friendly. • Financial Aid Office needs more staff, better quality, and more pleasant staff (mainly the VA Representative). • More lighting outside, especially for those in night classes. • The bathrooms are always nasty when I go in there. • Make the student lounge bigger. • They need to have another smoking area that is not just in one place and we don't have to walk all the way to the picnic area where the smoking area is when some teachers only give 5 to 10 minute break between the classes. • Not sure how important or unimportant this is but I still have yet to see a counselor etc.,but I know the course of study that I wish to take and am confident in my decision. I was hearing new students should see one, but I was never directed to after I started the SDV course I learned about them that everyone should have seen one. • The books in the bookstore shouldn't cost so much money, so they need to make the prices of the books affordable. • The books in the bookstore shouldn't cost so much money, so they need to make the prices of the books affordable. • The books in the bookstore shouldn't cost so much money, so they need to make the prices of the books affordable. What would make the new student orientation day more beneficial? • Everything is beneficial • By showing them a lot about their major not just by talking about it. • To get to tour the school • Better times. • It’s good the way it is. • Instead of taking the time to introduce everyone, as most will not remember the names or what the staff member does, just direct students where they can get help and what you can help them with as that information is more likely to seed in a person’s mind. Set up hand outs to be filled out about each student’s career goals to be turned in so a counselor is able to get in touch and touch bases with the students. • More handouts. • Gave me more information What would make the SDV course and/or the customized textbook better? • It is the best. can't get any better • I think everything is just fine about the class. • The textbook could be a little smaller • Instead of just going through the course and saying and saying here is what you need to do to be a success, stuff like take notes keep a schedule time management skills etc, as most will only learn what the instructor wants to hear and then throw it out the window later on and continue to do things that works for them. I would say restructure the course for things that will actually help the student and they would actually take things away from it. Instead of saying here you will receive a grade for doing this assignment or that it would be more beneficial to actually take that time to sit down with a counselor if people needed to or research job opportunities so people know what is out there for them and would take more motivation away from that. I think this is a great opportunity for some to learn to work with others. If you wanted to teach people how to take notes and the importance of them create projects where you have to work with others proving the point rather than just saying it’s in the book as people are less apt to remember that after the course. It would also be prudent to set up exercises showing how study groups could benefit a student or how to study by allowing a student to actually come in and use some of that time to study showing students who are having difficulties and would like to hear them some study techniques to help them along the way. It is also a great way to show the benefits of a study group. I don’t disagree at all with the way the course is just a few suggestions if you all think any of it could help.
