Ex Officio Members Present: R. Arouca, B. Brown, S. Ross
The minutes from April 9th were approved and the meeting began with the UM minute.
Business Items:

The Council considered the distribution of the Bertha Morton rankings. There was
discussion regarding whether there was a need for a re-evaluation of the middle group
candidates. The subcommittees negotiated additional candidates above the top 30% and
decided to give 25 $3000 scholarships and no fellowships. The final list will be
circulated to the Council for proofing and then provided to the Graduate School to notify
the recipients.

Since only three members responded to the request to vote on the letter to the Provost, it
was not sent. The letter was approved with minor edits. Camie will send it with an
invitation to meet again with the Council before the end of the semester.

The Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate had some concerns regarding the
changes proposed to the Council’s Charge. Chair Sprang will be meeting with ECOS
tomorrow to make the case for the revisions.

Last week at the Faculty Senate meeting a senator raised an issue with regard to an IIP
student changing committees. He was upset that the student was to follow a policy that
was not yet approved. He would like to make sure the policy includes safeguards for the
student.
The specific student issue is working through the graduate school and the policy has
revised to address a request for a committee change in the future. Students can appeal to
the Graduate School Dean for an advocate independent of their department.
Interim IIP Director Brown suggests that the governance structure be clear with regard to
IIP Oversight. There are departments considering specializations within the program that
could accommodate multi-campus involvement. Options within an existing program
require a level II proposal and Board of Regents approval. Advising tracks do not show
on students’ transcripts.

Next week the Council will discuss the graduate school self- study if the Provost is
unable to attend the meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:05 p.m.
