Drexel University College of Medicine Hahnemann University Hospital PODIATRIC SURGICAL RESIDENCY PROGRAM EMERGENCY MEDICINE Goals: This rotation will incorporate review/treatment of systems including but not limited to: cardiovascular, pulmonary, hepatic, renal, endocrine, musculoskeletal, vascular, dermatological, psychiatric, gastrointestinal and neurological in an emergency room setting. Competencies: The resident will be able to demonstrate the following competencies: 1. Understand the principles of triage 2. Understand and demonstrate the appropriate approach to the acutely injured patient, especially as it applies to the musculoskeletal system 3. Understand and demonstrate principles and application of closed reduction, fractures and dislocations 4. Demonstrate the ability to assess and manage skin and soft tissue injury 5. Recognize and understand the management of: • Diabetic emergencies • Emergency treatment of sepsis • Acute cardiopulmonary emergency • Anaphylaxis • Asthma/COPD exacerbation 6. Demonstrate the ability to: • Maintain airway • Control bleeding • Manage seizure disorder • Insert IV’s and other access lines • Apply casts, splints, dressings
