ASCRC Minutes 10/29/13 Poetry Corner, Mansfield Library, 2:10 p.m. Members Present: J. Deboer, K. Easwaramurthi, C. Henderson, L. Gillison, T. Manuel, S. Samson, T. Thibeau, M. Triana, E. Uchimoto, N. Vonessen, G. Weix Members Absent/ Excused: L. Eagleheart, J. Hickman Ex-Officio Present: B. Holzworth, N. Hinman, J. Laine The minutes from 10/22/13 were amended and approved. There were several corrections to the approved curriculum lists. Communication Items: Professor Vonessen alerted ASCRC to the timing issue with deficient grade (DEF notifications. Students were notified two weeks after the faculty deadline to submit grades. The deadline for faculty was extended to get more participation. There is still a low rate of faculty participation. Often faculty members have not graded a major assignment by the fifth week. The Office of Student Success sends the notice to students. Students can check the system at any time. They do not have to wait for the notice. Last year a workgroup was established to look at improvements, but it was put on hold when the Office of Students Success applied for a grant. Assistant VP O’Hare will be invited to a meeting to discuss the issue. Business The Science and Math Curriculum Consent Agenda below was approved. None of the items were controversial. A few revisions to syllabi and e-Curr forms have been made. The Social Science Curriculum Consent Agenda below was approved. The course form for SOCI 212H was to remove a general education designation. It will be sent to the General Education Committee. The form for ANTY 336 requested writing status as well as a description change. A writing course form will need to be submitted for the writing request. The e-Curr form will be changed to request a description change only. There were two items from Political Science that require follow-up correspondence with the department. The program modification for International Development Studies is on hold. There is a question regarding whether the course being added to the program will continue to be taught or taught frequent enough to be included in a minor. PSCI 437 is identified as equivalent (CCN) to a course at MSU. Yet the course title is different. The instructor will need to get the syllabus for the MSU course to determine whether they are 80% equivalent. ASCRC briefly discussed the request for the GPA requirement in one of the options. The University policy is that both majors and minors must have a GPA of 2.0. A student may receive a C- on a course, but still must have a 2.0GPA. There is much confusion regarding terms such as option, specialization, or track. There needs to be some form of standardization. Faculty should be careful in their use of the term option to students. Official options are listed on students’ transcripts. Advising tracks or focus areas are not. Degree builder may help with some of this. It may also be helpful to have a glossary of terms in the catalog. The catalog should be audited at some point for consistency of terminology. ASCRC may consider this issue in the spring. The Business and Journalism Subcommittee reported on follow-up inquiries. The program modification to create a certificate in Sustainable Business Strategy was approved. Journalism is still considering the issue of requiring a prerequisite or corequisite for its course Follow-up was received for some of the pending Humanities courses. However, not all the subcommittee members have responded. Chair Gillison met with the Mansfield Center and requested significant revisions to the forms. The forms will be disapproved in e-Curr so the revisions can be made by the requestor. ASCRC considered the rationale from Social Work to consider a late course form. It agreed that the form should be reviewed by the subcommittee. Good and Welfare Professor Thibeau notified ASCRC that a section in the catalog requiring International Students with English difficulties to enroll in the appropriate academic support courses designated EASL and to reduce their workload has not been in the catalog since 2007-2008. He was wondering why the information was removed. Camie will communicate with Bonnie Holzworth regarding the missing language.
