Position Description: This outreach notice is for the Regional Student Trainee
(Biological Sciences) position for the Renewable Resources Department area. The
Rocky Mountain Region consists of 17 National Forests and 7 National Grasslands,
operating as 11 units. The various units fall within five western states: Colorado,
Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. The focus of this position is to provide
administrative support to the Renewable Resource Director area. For basic
qualifications, the OPM qualifications handbook will be used.
Duties of the Position: Duties may involve but are not limited to:
Duties primarily focus on providing work and training experience to prepare the student
intern (NTE) for a more advanced, permanent professional or technical research position
through a variety of tasks that utilize established processes, methods, and procedures
that include the following assignments and responsibilities:
1) Assists in the acquisition of field data by measuring and recording pertinent
biological information peculiar to the specific assignment. The assignment
involves performance of a series of related technical tasks which must be
completed according to a predetermined and established routine. Tabulates and
orders data as directed and prepares data for computer use.
2) Establishes routine laboratory and greenhouse studies following accepted
procedures and planned statistical designs, collects and records study data, and
applies treatments under controlled laboratory conditions.
3) Assists higher grade employees in setting up and operating standard equipment
used in performing laboratory tests and making scientific measurements and
observations of sample materials gathered from experimental field plots.
4) Following accepted procedures, performs routine and repetitious laboratory tests
and operations such as preparation of culture media, transfer of stock fungi
cultures, maintenance of culture and isolation records, determination of moisture
content, and under immediate supervision performs the more specialized
operations involved in the isolation of fungi from diseased material.
5) Assists in the layout of experimental plots by taking measurements and marking
corners and boundaries.
6) Uses botanical key to identify plants encountered during field trips or surveys of
Forest areas.
7) Assists in the collection, handling, and preservation of specimens. All biological
data pertinent to collections and preservation are recorded. Assists in
maintenance of various collections used in connection with day-to-day research
activities.
8) Operates a variety of scientific and laboratory instruments, apparatus, and office
machines. This may include dissecting and compound microscopes,
environmental chambers, balances, and calculating and adding machines.
9) Observes and records expected responses in experiments and keeps aware of
factors and situations included in experiments to ensure against error and to
increase the reliability of the results obtained.
10) Performs other duties as assigned.

currently located at 740 Simms Street, Golden, Colorado 80401.
