Position Title: Natural Resource Assistant Project Lead

Hourly Rate of Pay: $13.00

Length of Position: April - October. Possible extension of position.

Work Schedule (per week): 20 hours spring/fall, 40 hours summer, Monday –Thursday working ten hour days.

Location: Position based at Beaver Creek Reserve located in Fall Creek, WI. Regular travel throughout west central Wisconsin.

Beaver Creek Reserve Citizen Science Center’s (CSC) mission connects people with nature to carry out scientific research and promote environmental stewardship. The CSC achieves this mission by partnering with government agencies, universities, non-profit organizations and research facilities. Through grants, contracts and collaborations the Citizen Science Center conducts projects consisting of habitat and ecosystem management, aquatic and terrestrial species. Projects have included but are not limited to solitary bees, bird surveys, plants, streams, bats, small mammals, bird banding, butterflies and invasive species.

Position Summary: The Natural Resource Assistant Project Lead will play a main role in assisting in most aspects of organizing, running and completing various education and research projects. This position is extremely diverse and applicant should expect to be working on something different every day. Projects include working with various flora and fauna, with a heavy emphasis on birds. Main projects include a biological inventory of Beaver Creek Reserve, conducting grassland, forest bird and Breeding Bird Atlas surveys, raising milfoil weevils as a biological agent against Eurasian water milfoil, and assisting with the development of an aquatic invasive species strategic plan for the Lower Chippewa River and the Celebrate the

Lower Chippewa River Conference. Additional projects may include the Bluebird Restoration Project,

Nature Immersion into Early Childhood, bird banding, and the Citizen Lake Monitoring Network. Tasks will include training volunteers, developing project methods, scheduling day to day work, collecting data, entering data and creating final materials. During a week, this position’s schedule may include recruiting volunteers, choosing survey methods, designing data sheets, conducting bird surveys at sunrise, bat surveys at night, plant surveys, creating maps in ArcGIS, rearing milfoil weevils, collecting aquatic plants, entering data, communicating with partners and scheduling staff. The Assistant Project Lead will act as a mentor to students, citizen scientist, LTE staff and the public. Assist in the day to day operation of the Citizen Science

Center including staff meetings, public relations, marketing, and maintaining a respectable building appearance.

Responsibilities:

Planning, organizing and completing research projects.

Communicating with CSC Technician, Director, and partners.

Provide mentoring and training to LTE staff and volunteers.

Conduct training programs for volunteers.

Accurately complete field data sheets using defined protocols.

Navigate through remote areas using maps, compass, and a hand-held GPS unit.

Conduct surveys of various flora and fauna, including birds.

Transfer field data into digital formats.

Provide routine updates to Citizen Science Technician regarding field surveys.

Create maps using GIS.

Write final reports and create scientific posters.

Attend events promoting the CSC.

Work with Marketing Director to provide regular project updates for media release.

Assist in day to day operation of the CSC including staff meetings, public relations, and maintaining a respectable building appearance.

Qualifications:

Completed a B.S. in a natural resource related field.

Identification skills covering a wide variety of taxa including aquatic/terrestrial plants, small mammals, invertebrates, invasive species, and a strong focus on birds.

Excellent organization skills.

Functional knowledge of GIS.

Able to work with little or no supervision.

Comfortable with extensive responsibility.

Self-starter and extremely flexible.

Strong communication skills in both the written and verbal form.

Knowledge of MS Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

Able to orienteer with a map and GPS unit.

Evidence of strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire others.

Able to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Comfortable working on/in the water and in remote places.

Experience hauling, launching and operating motorized and non-motorized watercraft.

Possess a valid driver’s license and vehicle for work use.

Desired Qualifications:

Two years of experience in a natural resource or environmental position.

Experience managing volunteers or staff.

Comfortable in public speaking.

Familiarity of eBird and other online databases.
