Natural Resource Technician Position Announcement Position Title: Natural Resource Technician Hourly Rate of Pay: $10.50 per hour Length of Position: Position will begin May 24, 2016 and continue through August 31, 2016. Work Schedule: Saturday –Wednesday. 40 hours/week. Weekend and holiday work required. Location: Position based at Beaver Creek Reserve located in Fall Creek, WI. Regular travel throughout west central Wisconsin. Beaver Creek Reserve Citizen Science Center’s (CSC) mission connects people with nature to carry out scientific research and promote environmental stewardship. The CSC achieves this mission by partnering with government agencies, universities, non-profit organizations and research facilities. Through grants, contracts and collaborations the Citizen Science Center conducts projects consisting of habitat and ecosystem management, aquatic and terrestrial species. Projects have included but are not limited to solitary bees, bird surveys, plants, streams, bats, small mammals, bird banding, butterflies and invasive species. Position Summary: Beaver Creek Reserve’s Citizen Science Center is seeking an enthusiastic candidate interested in assisting on numerous natural resource projects throughout the West Central region of Wisconsin. This position is extremely diverse and applicant should expect to be working on something different every day. Projects will include various flora and fauna, with a heavy emphasis on birds. Primary duties (25%) conducting surveys of flora and fauna for a biological inventory on Beaver Creek Reserve (25%) working with a local lake group to assist in invasive species control including raising and releasing milfoil weevils as biocontrol agents against Eurasian water milfoil, (25%) will educating boaters on aquatic invasive species through the Clean Boats, Clean Waters watercraft inspection program at boat landings located on Lake Wissota. Clean Boats, Clean Waters requires weekend and holiday availability. The remaining 25% of this position will vary from day to day, with tasks including but not limited to: assisting with the planning of the Celebrate the Lower Chippewa River Conference, grassland and forest bird surveys, creating education materials for children, bat surveys, data entry, outreach, and other project needs as they arise. This position requires flexibility, is extremely diverse and a great opportunity to gain a wide range of experience. Position requires regular travel. A personal vehicle is required. Responsibilities: Conduct surveys of various flora and fauna, including birds. Raise and release invertebrates as biocontrol agents against Eurasian water milfoil. Learn and participate in Clean Boats, Clean Waters watercraft inspection program. Recruit, coordinate and train volunteers. Regular communication with Project Lead, Assistant Project Lead and partnering Lake Associations. Accurately complete field data sheets using defined protocols. Navigate through remote areas using maps, compass, and a hand-held GPS unit. Transfer field data into digital formats. Enter data into online data bases such as SWIMS - Wisconsin’s Surface Water Integrated Monitoring System and eBird. Organize and lead a public bat program and survey on Beaver Creek Reserve property. Produce outreach materials for projects as needed. Qualifications: Currently enrolled in/completed B.S. natural resource related field. Possess a valid driver’s license and vehicle for work use. Able to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, including July 4th. Comfortable working with all ages of the public. Identification skills covering a wide variety of taxa including aquatic/terrestrial plants, small mammals, invertebrates, invasive species, and a strong focus on birds. Able to orienteer with a map and GPS unit. Knowledge of MS Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher. Ability to work effectively with volunteers of all ages. Requires ability to work with little supervision. Extremely responsible, organized, enthusiastic and a self-starter. Comfortable working on/in the water and in remote places. Desired Qualifications: Experience hauling, launching and operating motorized and non-motorized watercraft. Functional knowledge of GIS. Two years of experience in a natural resource or environmental position. Familiarity of eBird, SWIMS, and other online databases.
